and the gas tax increase protests are getting big.  This could be the start of something over there.  With Brexit and all.

“It’s going to trigger a civil war and me, like most other citizens, we’re all ready,” said Benjamin Vrignaud, a 21-year-old protester from Chartres.

“They take everything from us. They steal everything from us,” said 21-year-old Laura Cordonnier.

The famed avenue was speckled with plumes of smoke and neon — owing to the color of the vests the self-styled “yellow jacket” protesters don. French drivers are required to keep neon security vests in their vehicles.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said that 8,000 protesters flooded the Champs-Elysees at the demonstration’s peak and there were nearly 106,000 protesters and 130 arrests in total nationwide.

Castaner denounced protesters from the far-right whom he called “rebellious,” as he accused National Assembly leader Marine Le Pen of encouraging them.

But the Interior Ministry played down the scale of Saturday’s demonstrations by highlighting that up to 280,000 people took part in last Saturday’s protest.

The unrest is proving a major challenge for embattled Macron, who’s suffering in the polls.

The leader, who swept to power only last year, is the focus of rage for the “yellow jacket” demonstrators who accuse the pro-business centrist of elitism and indifference to the struggles of ordinary French.

Macron has so far held strong and insisted the fuel tax rises are a necessary pain to reduce France’s dependence on fossil fuels and fund renewable energy investments — a cornerstone of his reforms of the nation. He will defend fresh plans to make the “energy transition” easier next week.

Keeping a watch on things here.

So far this is not consuming the main stream news here in the UK.

Just being mentioned in a "The French are at it again" way.

However you are correct that Brexit is becoming a big situation here.

4 months or so out and no real plan exists. A proposal has been formulated. Yet it is not really anything but A political bandage for the wound.

Both sides of the issue are loosing faith in the government and the back stabbing is in full force within the political parties.

As I have said before. This whole thing is so messed up that it is almost impossible to predict what is going to happen.

The UK economy is definitely going to take a hit. EU workers are leaving the UK. This is hurting business and public services. The National Health Service is facing staffing issues already.

It is going to be an interesting ride here for a while.

The French are always protesting something, or they're on strike for one reason or another.

Graffiti was removed from the Arc de Triomphe today after anti-Macron protesters stormed through Paris on Saturday.

The protesters occupied the city centre and torched cars, smashed windows with clubs and axes and stole an assault rifle from riot police firing tear gas and water cannon in France's worst urban rioting for years.

The French President - who faced calls to resign from protesters who scrawled anti-Macron slogans on the Arc de Triomphe - today vowed to bring the rioters to justice as he inspected wreckage on the Champs-Elysees.

The 'yellow vest' protests, which began as a rebellion against a fuel tax hike but have expanded into weeks of civil unrest, spread across the country yesterday and ended with 133 people injured, including 23 police officers, and 412 arrested last night.

Macron was jeered by lingering yellow-vest supporters before chairing a crisis meeting with ministers, amid calls to declare a state of emergency or even send in the army to quell the violence.

Gonna wait and see....

Although stuff like this is pretty common in the EU. Protests happen all the time. It is just that MSM only reports on the ones that suit their adgenda.

The majority of protests that take place in EU countries are people giving voice to their views and unlike most other places the political classes do tend to listen to the message and make changes when they can to keep the peace. Especially the French. The French Revolution is still fresh in the minds of that society still.

We shall see......

With BREXIT leaving the UK and several other countries debating leaving the EU I truly wonder if we are witnessing the beginning of something bigger.

From what I am reading on these riots it is truly interesting to me that most of the rioters are from the Middle Class. I also read that folks from the extreme left and right are trying to "dog pile on" the movement.

For you forum members who herald Socialism or Communism, this is what these forms of economic policy's give you. More and more government telling you what is right and how to spend your money.

It is fun to watch and prophetize a bit. To quote gadget, ""

PARIS — French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe announced Tuesday that the French government will temporarily suspend a carbon tax plan that triggered weeks of often violent protests nationwide.

To help curb climate change, the government had proposed the taxes, which were slated to take effect in January and were designed to wean consumers off diesel and other polluting fuels and to favor electric cars. But the price increases those taxes represented led to social unrest unseen in recent years that quickly became a full-blown crisis, and President Emmanuel Macron became the latest world leader to suffer at home for trying to impose green taxes.

“No tax is worth putting in danger the unity of the nation,” Philippe said as he announced the suspension.

The French government’s announcement came as delegates from around the world gathered in Katowice, Poland, for a climate conference designed to advance guidelines for how to meet the demands of the 2015 Paris agreement.

Macron has ranked among the most passionate advocates of curbing climate change by any and all available means, and his government’s reversal is likely to cast a pall over this week’s conference.

Even before the French decision, delegates were grappling with a world that has fallen far short of the commitments made in Paris, with no clear road map to targets.

Hi all,

Thought I might chime in a bit on this.

A few items to concentrate on for perspective.

The people that are demonstrating are the French equivalent of college snowflakes in the US.

Take a look at the numbers being reported. In the grand scheme of things we are talking small numbers. When the number of police on the scene out number the protesters. Then we are talking about bring elements.

Think dumb ass people like ANTIFA.

Not saying there are not issues in France and the EU that need delt with.

Just saying this is not an Arab Spring type of thing at the moment.

Cheers all

I forgot to mention that the act of rioting about the slightest little thing has been woven into the French culture since the French revolution.

Then again there is something like that here in the UK.

You should see the mass brawls that happen over here at some soccer matches. Freaking unbelievable.

The potential exists for this to bring changes in the government. So we can wait and see.

Small changes in policy are the likely response.

Ground swelling and sweeping changes as a result of this stuff is very unlikely.

Something that is not reported on in the MSM is the standards of living in the Prime EU countries is VERY high. The populaces have very little to complain about. So when they do it grabs media attention BIG time. That can paint a confusing picture about the current state of affairs.

Contrary to popular belief at this time. The EU is still in a healthy condition and looks to be in little danger of dissolving. While not perfect and plagued with some problems. It is still one of the largest and most robust Trade Unions in existence today.

I will keep an eye out as time goes on. Anything is possible.

Cheers

Macron promises 'all means' to restore calm after Paris riots, pledges to speed up tax relief
Travis Fedschun
By Travis Fedschun | Fox News
Pressure mounts on French President Macron

French President Emanuel Macron, his political career in peril and his country engulfed in increasingly violent protests, pleaded with the country's employers Monday to give their workers a bonus and also promised a reduction in taxes in a bid to restore order after demonstrations have deeply shaken the nation during the past month.

In a pre-taped address broadcast on television, Marcon criticized the "inadmissible violence" of the protests and promised to use "all means" to restore calm.

"When violence is unleashed, freedom stops," he said.

The French president promised to speed up tax relief and urged companies to give bonuses to struggling workers by the end of the year.

"I would ask all employers who can, pay an end-of-year bonus to their employees," he said.

Among his pledges Monday, Macron reiterated his promises to raise the minimum wage and abolish taxes on overtime pay starting Jan. 1 -- several months ahead of schedule. He also said a tax hike pensioners faced would be scrapped.

All of the measures offered had been demanded by the yellow-vested protesters who have led four weeks of increasingly violent demonstrations against Macron's presidency, which is seen by demonstrators as favoring the rich.

Macron acknowledged "anger and indignation“ among members of the public over the cost of living, but added "no indulgence" would be given to the people behind the protest violence.

The president said "no anger justifies" attacking police or looting stores, saying both actions threaten France's cherished liberty. Macron also spent Monday meeting with local and national political leaders, unions and business leaders to hear their concerns after the protests that started in struggling provinces and spread to rioting in the capital.

His speech to the nation came after Paris' chief prosecutor revealed Sunday that nearly 1,000 people were being held in custody after weekend protests in the capital city again turned violent.

Riding wave of social unrest, French high-school students vow ‘Black Tuesday’ protests

Even as it grapples with violent demonstrations over living costs, the French government is hunkering down for a “Black Tuesday” of protests by high-school students who have jumped onto the Yellow Vest bandwagon.

Ever since the May 1968 protests that paralysed France and precipitated the demise of its war hero Charles de Gaulle, French governments have been terrified by the prospect of facing a united front of workers and student protests. While French universities are largely quiet nowadays, the prospect of a two-pronged offensive edged nearer to reality last week when high-school pupils seized on the momentum from the so-called Yellow Vest movement to vent their anger at President Emmanuel Macron’s educational reforms.

Up to 300 French high schools, known as lycées, were barricaded every day last week, amid scenes of vandalism, bins set on fire and violent clashes between police and students. The tense standoff made international headlines on Thursday when video footage posted on social media showed riot police in a Paris suburb forcing dozens of students to kneel down in rows, their hands on their heads.

On Monday, France’s education ministry said the number of affected schools had fallen to 120, only a third of which were fully blocked. But with student unions calling for a “Black Tuesday” in lycées across the country on December 11, the relative calm could prove to be merely a lull before the storm.
