Experiences with EOTech Repair services?
« on: January 13, 2012, 04:39:47 PM »
Just sent my EOTech in for repairs due to some malfunctions. (Quite uncharacteristic of EOTech, but I digress). Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with their repairs dept and about how long did it take for said repairs to be conducted? Any insight is much appreciated!  I was doing some diving with the weapon in some frigid waters and I suspect that it caused something to foul up. It wasnt to bad. The reticle just got really dim and lost clarity in a large portion of the viewing window. It was more of a nusance than anything. I had the time and it was still under warranty. Figured Id get it repaired.

You're a fucking stud is how you broke it.

Hey man that makes me thing of a great Q&A topic. How do you deal with a wet AR series rifle?

Weapons maintenance and more weapons maintenance. A lot of CLP prior to the dive prevents short term corrosion, but thourough cleaning is MANDATORY after dive operations. Contrary to hollywood, the magazines are prone to failure if not kept water proofed during the dive (the magazine followers tend to get brittle and crack, especially in cold salt water cond). I use a duey bag that's towed behind me with my chest rig in it. Ammo and rig stays dry, and once I insert, I kit up and on with the miserable wet hike to the O.P..  :))

Does water get into the gastube or does having the barrel capped and bolt closed good enough?

This is a subject with that has seen no coverage here so any info you want to add would be like gold.

I usually never cap my barrel with anything unless its a bfa (Blank firing apparatus). Not that barrel caps are bad, its just that I forget that there on and shoot through them or I leave them on for extended periods of time and cant get the darn thing off (I'm then forced to shoot it off anyway :)) ).  As for water, nothing keeps it out unless waterproofed inside a container or bag. Just make sure you point the barrel to the deck BEFORE exiting the water. As you pull the rifle out of the water, barrel down, it acts like a straw being pulled out of a glass of water , the water level in the barrel and gas tube are equal to the ambient environment, as the barrel comes out, the water stays where it came from. End result: Empty gas tube, barrel, buffer tube, and everything else.  If you wait to "dump" the water out of the barrel, not all the water may come out of the gas tube and could possibly blow the gas tube or piston at the gas port in the barrel due to over pressure .

Got the EOtech back last Thurs. Exactly 2.5 weeks after shipping it to them.  Outside of minimal to no communication, my overall experience was out-fuc*in-standing! My optic came back repaired with new mounting hardware and a new protective hood(items I didn't even need, but I'm not gonna complain).
The optic was shipped in a molded Styrofoam carrier and was at mechanical zero when I re mounted it.I just co-witnessed it with my irons to get it close and re-zeroed it at the range. No issues or discrepancies at this time. Ill keep you all posted.
