Title: Just an Update...
Post by: JohnyMac on April 04, 2017, 07:50:23 AM
... not that anybody gives a crap.

We sold our home in RI. The closing was last Friday. Although Hurricane Sandy did a pretty good job of helping us minimize crap it is still a big chore to box up and get ready for the loading folks to load the POD.

The loading folks were supposed to be here Tuesday however I called it off and rescheduled for Thursday. A nice little Nor'easter was rolling in today and it would have been a bloody mess.

Living on a boat most of early life and then living here for 20 years, we have never used a commercial mover to move us. This time we went the POD route.

PODs (https://www.pods.com/) are a great alternate way to move your stuff. The POD people evaluate what you have to move, recommend one of their specific size PODS, then drop it off. You can load it or pay a few guys to load it. Being on the wrong side of 50, I hired a company through PODS to load the POD.

Once it is loaded you throw a lock on the door, call PODS, and then they come and pick it up. It can be put in storage or sent directly to "where-ever". We opted to put it into storage while we secure a place to sort it out for sale and or use.

The cost for you folks who might be interested going this route was $2K for the POD, storage  and transportation to the our location in NE PA. Plus another $1K for the loaders. So far it is a pretty slick and inexpensive option.

Well there you go folks...

$3K is a good price for a POD move, I hope your homeowners insurance made up what Sandy took.

@ JoJo, actually FEMA insurance did. I would say we got 90% of the value. We paid ~$4K a year for the FEMA insurance. So $4Kx20 years= $80K we laid out and they gave us in the end $93K to fix the house. We had some old furniture in storage so we used that since 2012. Put the house on the market in the fall of 2013 sold it spring 2017. So on the market for       3 1/2 years.

MrsMac and I got back to the cabin around 2145 Hrs yesterday.

The packing by the movers went pretty smoothly until the skys opened up and rained cats & dogs. At that time the loaders had completed ~90% of our household goods.

The movers started at 0930 and was done at about 1330 Hrs. A very good friend stopped by and helped us to pack & load the last 1% of stuff. If he hadn't had shown up we would not of been able to leave by 1500 hrs. Thank you Bruce! While we did pack up the last few things it rained so hard that we donned fowl weather gear.

Made three stops on the way back to the cabin: Post office, gun store, and a candy shop. Due to the weather we didn't walk into the cabin till 2145 Hrs. For you folks in the the NE that was quite a storm yesterday huh?

Picked up a S&W M&P Pro Series C.O.R.E. handgun. It comes with two barrels, one normal and the other threaded for a can. The sights are raised to see over the can. Also bought a Apex trigger assembly to drop in as the one that comes with the handgun is poor. Once the work is done I will do a write-up on it.
