Quick funny story.
Back many moons ago I use to run a $160M region of 120+ retail stores. I could see live how each store was doing and my admin use to send me a mid day sales report with regional and district totals.
One week we were doing pretty poorly with sales so I sent a regional email out to each Store Manager and cc'd the DM's that instructed everybody to go out and buy a 1 # box of table salt. Once they had the salt, spread it just outside their front doors. If they did this successfully they would have more customers come into their stores.
About an hour after I sent the email the phone calls started. First they came from the DM's questioning my sanity. I patiently explained to each that an Italian member of my wife's family who owned a restaurant in Philly use to do this to drum up customers on slow nights. Then the emails and phone calls started coming in from the Store Managers telling me, "it is working!"
I asked each Store Manager to share their experience with the whole region on line. Before I knew it every store was doing it.
Then I got a phone call from the SrVP of Stores and the CEO who inquired if I had lost my marbles. I explained the whole thing, Italian, Aunt, salt, sales, blah blah blah. I then asked them to check sales for my region and sure enough our sales were going through the roof.
OK in hindsight what I had done was get people off their fat asses by telling them to do something. Some did it and the results were good so I asked them to share with the group which brought the crazy idea up another notch. Excitement breeds excitement and excitement breeds success. And of course success breeds more success.
PS: Several months later we had a company District Managers meeting; I was awarded a 25# bag of rock salt. The CEO called it, "The get off your Ass and do Something Award." They would give the award periodically throughout the year. I wonder if they still have it? Oh well.
