Some advice from an old grunt: Before all else learn the words to "Climb to Glory".  When you get to your unit expect some shit - you're a cherry and it's a part of the process.  They're going to hammer you and the best way to take it is chin up and proud.  That earns respect. Once ya get yer feet wet these are some good things that will help ya along:

- Above all else be a PT stud.
- Get your shit squared away and keep it that way.  Don't question the standards just exceed them.
- Try to get the following classes at a minimum:  Combat Lifesaver, MAC Level II and III.
- Get your EIB.  Anyone that gets in a fight can get a CIB.  The EIB is a different animal.
- Once you make SPC fight and be ready to go to WLC ASAP. 
- As soon as you're out of WLC fight to go to either MLLC or RIP (10th used to get RIP slots) then fight for a Team Leader slot.
- If at any time an Air Assault slot comes open be ready to go on a moments notice.
- Since you're already headed to a unit the most probable best case for Airborne school is you take the physical and put it in on a 4187 in conjunction with a request to PCS to Bragg or Italy after one year on station or right after you redeploy waiving your stability.  Talk to your SL, PSG, and 1SG.  But don't hit them up until you have at least a year in the unit.  I used to tell troops the general rule of thumb for PCSs Is 90 days after deployment but start asking during the last half of your deployment.  If you go past the 120 to 180 day mark after redeployment you can end up getting boxed in for the next one.   

Never turn any kind of training down no matter how crappy it sounds or seems.  I got volunteered once to go to Bliss for some "unspecified field duty and cross training" and ended up getting to live fire Stingers and go on the most outrageous FTX I ever went on with some of those serious HLSD guys.

Heads up - shitheads don't get cool schools or other HLSD shit.  If you're a troublemaker you'll end up in HHC doing something like being the Battalion mail clerk.

All I'm saying is back then urban combat wasn't exactly their specialty.  Urban combat IS (and was even back then) the 82nd Airborne's specialty.  Our idiot leaders sent the wrong unit.  10th Mountain is more suited for an Afghanistan-type deal.

1k - I'll give you a little insight to why the 82nd didn't get the nod for Somalia.  At that point in time there were a dozen possible short notice deployments in the que and the 82nd had to be passed over to be held for that. I remember all too well the hellraising that happened when they sent the folks down to cleanup after Andrew because it was going to impact the Divisions ability to reinforce DRF1.  The 10th didn't have the requirement at the time to kickout a DRF.  Think about all the shit the Division did in the timeframe Somalia happened.  The follow on Panama deployment, standing up for Bosnia, Haiti, and a few others that didn't happen.  That only left the 10th and 101st and the 10th hadn't deployed yet except for a few small TFs. 

IMHO the whole Somalia debacle should have been a Marine operation. At that point in time the Corps was years ahead of the Army in MOUT.
