How many people know?
« on: November 13, 2015, 04:35:24 PM »
How many people know that you're a prepper? In my case three, my stepson his wife and my granddaughter. They live two hours away and I'm trying to get them to come here if SHTF. His wife and daughter are nurses.
In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.

Well, make sure that either you or they have lots of medical equipment...in today's modern age, the medical industry is increasingly specialized. Experienced nurses, especially ICU and ER nurses, have great skills...but what skills they'll be able to transfer to your personal bug out/bug in location depends on how many supplies and equipment you have. Field medicine without modern resupply isn't practiced except perhaps by EMTs in dire situations or combat medics in the field. If you're looking for any nurse or doctor to be able to help you, you need to take this into consideration and modify your prepping accordingly. Research or ask them IF "x" event happens, what they would need. Bandages, medications, antibacterial treatments, sterile water, the list goes on for miles. It would take a LOT of time, storage space, and money to completely prepare resources to compliment their skill sets. Of course, if you DID manage to do this, if the S ever did HTF, you'd be an indispensable resource to your entire community. Medical expertise from trained medical personnel with the proper supplies and equipment will be one of the most sought after commodities during WROL. Just wait until people are getting shot, hitting their legs with axes while chopping wood, falling off of tree stands while hunting, getting bitten by poisonous snakes, getting hypothermia, etc.

Uh, people that know?  Few.

Supplies in hand?  Not quite lots but working on it.

Others selected (medical primarily for here) and being groomed for joining?  A GP, a neurology guy and cardio guy.  I really expect them to be here.

Main thing I need is more folks to man the line.

GP and cardio will be useful in many situations. Can't see a lot of use for neurology as a specialty field in WROL, though. Not because it isn't important, but because the technology and equipment necessary to exploit his knowledge just isn't available to those of us with moderate means.

^ I'd be happy to be proven wrong though, if you talk to him and he tells you different.

He did all the basic med school stuff before going there.  And I figure the MD part is good enough for starters.  But you are correct in general.  Besides he may have an ortho buddy or such.

Yep. Once they come over, they're more likely to recruit more of their own. Just remember, loose lips sink ships, and the more sailors you have on your lifeboat, especially ones who work closely with government edicts, the more likely your boat will be sunk by pirates (so to speak).

Not to divert this thread however....I am having more and more friends and family approach me about prepping. These are people who have thought MrsMac and I were a bit eccentric. I have told two people already after they invited themselves to the redoubt post a catastrophe, "no you are not invited. You bring nothing to the team (s) other than mouths to feed."

What was their response, JM? Did they offer to learn a trade, or ask what they could do to change your mind?

I totally forgot about being super secretive about preps and such. I use to be that way and forgot but this post reminded me. I remember one time I had to get an entire pallet of water upstairs from my garage to my upstairs apartment, without the other three apartment renters attached to my building, noticing. I took a couple cases of water a day until I had it all moved. Funny stuff. Now I just think it's a boring subject and can't imagine when I'd even bring prepping up to anyone, so loose lips is not an issue. Not that I have much food preps these days anyways.

I imagine it's very difficult for apartment dwellers to prep effectively. Limited space, hard to conceal, subject to inspections by owner, conversations you make might be overheard through walls/floor/ceiling/balcony.

rah45, on all of the occasions but one they chuckled, looked away and changed the subject.

The one told me that post a SHTF event, he would wait for us to leave the cabin and snipe us one by one. That is when I realized that your home/redoubt/castle is worthless without creating a separation through inelegance gathering, patrolling and other tactics to keep folks not part of the team as far away from your base as possible.

You need that guy's info, JM. If he knows you, he could use public records to find your land, right? Seems like a credible threat to me, if he was serious.

Eh, I had an entire decent sized room dedicated to it back then. My only concern was the floor collapsing. Never had an inspection of any kind while I lived there. Also, I usually talk pretty quietly to myself so others hearing me wasn't much of a concern.

Well, I meant people who need all the rooms for family stuff, like my family did. LOL
