How did you "wake up"
« on: October 10, 2011, 02:29:50 AM »
So how did you guys wake up so to speak? For me it came frome being laid off. Up untill then I knew things were not good. Prices of everything rising, alot of people out of jobs, wars on several fronts that we couldnt afford. Never gave it much thought. Found LnL while looking around for shooting drill vids on youtube. Figuring it would be better than 100% stagnant range, I might leanr something and it would be fun. Still diddnt give prepping much thought. Then I got laid off. After months of not finding a job and watching the news. It really dawned on me how close we are. Started looking more indepth. Watching more videos, finding more and more much more scarry info than I previously knew. 8 months of no work and non in sight. Relizing a very high percentage of the country was in my same boat and more more are following. Relized at this pace it wont be long untill something very gloomy happens. It kind of woke me up and got me in gear to start prepping. So that how I woke up. I origiannly always just pictured SHTF as a break in, or more (at the time) unrealistic thoughts of the "end of the world". Now I very much so see those thoughts arnt so far stretched after all. Now I'm workin on 3 months food water and ammo. With bigger plans in the future. Baby steps and small goals to start.
So whats yall's tale?

How did I wake up? Well, I finally woke up after talking more in depth with my long-time and close friend Xarmyguy. X had already woken and had mentioned several times how bad things in the world had gotten, especially here in the States. I never though that he was full of crap or crazy, but never really gave it much thought. I admit, I was one of those who said, "that stuff can't happen here, this is America".
Some time passed and another long-time friend, going by the handle 0staticfungus0, contacted me and mentioned many of the same thing that X had talked about.
The three of us got together for a weekend of talking and hanging out. This is when I actually saw the light. A very blinding light. A light I did not want to see.
The biggest thing for me is this: my daughter. I will not allow anyone to take away her freedom, her safety, her health and her happiness. That being said, I am Thankful for being woken up. Because of the Prepping community, who share their knowledge, skills and experiences, I can now preparing for the worst and make it count. I can get the knowledge to protect what is dearest to me. We all know that we can not fight the world alone or survive forever by ourselves, as much as we may want to. So as I prepare, I try to inform as many people as I can, so that they too can be woken.

I woke up because my good friend Frosty basically took me and "woke" me up to everything that's on the go in the world. So, its thanks to him that I've woken up.

Mrlockandload.

If it wasn't for him and his videos/website I wouldn't have had the mind to start prepping and research how our country/world is going down the shitter.  Also, it's a huge thanks to a lot of you guys (vets from L&L site) for sharing ideas, info, and just knowledge in general with me and all the fellow preppers on here.

Just so you know, BWB, it isn't very smart to list out the ammo and stuff you have for all your weapons. But I guess if you want to break OPSEC, that's your choice.

No offense but whats the point of so called OPSEC anymore anyways?  If I'm a bad guy all I gotta do is case you for a while and if I'm someone with power I can find out other ways EXACTLY what you have.

If you want to keep it close to your chest, good for you.  But this isn't a super secret squirrel nut recovery mission.  I like my personal privacy, just there's no need to be all paranoid about every little thing.

Although, is it paranoia if you're right? lol

You have a point, yes, but personally you won't catch me listing out how much ammo if have for me weapons (hell, you most likely won't even see me list out what weapons I do have). I just don't like seeing people saying "I have this amount of ammo for these guns and X amount of food/other supplies stored". What is the point of having all that if you're going to list it out on an open internet page, where is pretty simple to find out your location.

I dunno, but that's just me.

Frosty has a point... sure you could list out all your preps...but what personal gain do you get form doing so... its an unnessicary risk even if a very small one.

Well im not so proud to admit it put my start was the old Nutinfancy vids.  Back when it was just knives, guns, and the old shooting vids. that lead me to MillerUSAFs channel who lead me to LnLs channel and his website. i think the big thing was something on his website, an article of the personal experience of a man in the collapse in Argentina.

Well I woke up this morning with a slap from the gf and a grouchy "stop snoring"
As for me I first got bitten by the "prep bug" just before the Y2K thing. By that point I was already very much into guns and shooting. So the stocking up on food, water, and medical supplies was a new concept for me.  I must say that youtube and sites like this and the late ML&L (rip) are truly worth their weight in gold. 12 years ago I wasnt aware of anything like this on the internet.  Though thehun.com was a staple of my computing diet in the late 90's

My awakening was similar to yours. The article you're referring to is actually a blog by a user called "FerFAL" (his name is Fernando and he likes FALs).

If any one is interested, FerFal's YT channel is "TheModernSurvivalist".

I have been a "prepper" for as long as I can remember.  Time in the military etc I was part of the machine. When I got out I figured that training a couple of guns and a ruck full of MREs would get me through most shit.

I got a family and started paying more attention to the world around me and have gotten much more serious.

My husband actually. I'll admit that i was completely against prepping and the whole shebang for a long time. i just didn't see the need for it and thought it was a huge drain on the bank account but i consented to start putting small amounts back. About 2 years after we had started prepping there was a huge snow storm in our area. the snow drifts were so high that we had to rely on the items we put back to survive on because we could not leave the house. That opened the door to a bunch of ideas like learning to operate a firearm so i can protect myself and my daughter, so my husband worry about other things and being prepared in general.
