Honest Gold Sellers
« on: October 02, 2012, 03:42:45 PM »
It's about time I put my USDs in gold. Does anyone know of any good no nonsense gold sellers? I'm not looking to hunt for weeks on the lowest markup from shady vendors. I'm just looking for an honest price on gold Eagles, Buffalos, possibly krugerands or some sort of ounce bars. Can anyone recommend some good sellers? I'm new to the precious metal game so I'm lose in the cage.

Honestly, put it in something else unless you are a millionaire, even then, there are things you can buy to better prepare than gold.  You can't eat it, you can't shoot it, and money and gold become useless when the SHTF or WROL, honestly, nobody will trade it for anything until civilization returns.

I've talked to 6 people who have actually been in SHTF or WROL, and they said the exact same thing, bro.  JMHO.

Three things:

1) Like what EJR said, first put your money in beans, bullets, band-aides and then bullion,
2) Buy silver before you buy gold. It is cheaper and easier to use for barter. Gold is good if you have a shit-ton of USD lets say
north of $50K you want to protect which is about 28 one ounce coins, and
3) I dealt with Lear Capital. They charged about 2 - 4% over spot depending on how much you are buying. My suggestion is you
price out three houses and then play one against the other  ;)

Gold and silver will probably be at about 30% higher this time next year due in part to the 'open ended' Quantitative Easing that the Fed started in September. Keep in mind if you  buy precious metals you are buying them NOT as an investment. You are buying them to secure your paper dollars. Buy it and then do not look at the price post the sale.

Just saying... :))

Very good points both of you. Let me explain my sitiation in a little more detail.

To be perfectly blunt, I am sitting on top of roughly $30,000 USD. The only thing left for me to prep is around 5-7 thousand worth of storable foods. And there is no way that I am going to spend all of my thousands on Beans bullets and bandaids because I don't think all out WROL is going to happen tommorow (and that would be quite a bit of bullets beans and bandaids). Could steep inflation hit in the next few years? I think it will, which leads to me to my little Dollar problem. Even with a 10% inflation I am losing $3000 of buying power.

At first I considered land, but I have just under enough to really buy what I want and there is no way I want to take out a loan at my age and this unpredictable economy.

Like I said, you both bring up good points about gold being worthless in a practical sense, but the idea is to sell BEFORE SHTF. Or even sell after SHTF and be 4 steps ahead of everyone else.

Yea, QE3 has me more than a little worried. Like you say if gold shoots up 30%, with an investment of $15000 I will then be sitting on $19500. Sure the idea is to protect agianst inflation but any surge in gold is just icing on the cake.

5-7K really isn't that much bro. I'd say I have a healthy 4-5K into BB&B right now and I feel completely naked and underprepped.

I would say 7000 worth of oats and wheat is more than enough but that is just my opinion. Supplemented with chickens, goats, fish, game, honey, and everything we can harvest and can IN ADDITION to what I already have prepped is plenty. But that is just a personal decision based on my needs. I'm not telling anyone else how to prepare.

I'll toss out a few Ideas and should mention I help a friend at his pawn shop. Bars and bullion are beginning to be faked at a small scale right now, with rampant inflation we expect to see more tungsten core fakes and altered bars and rounds down to 1 oz sizes. I have personally handled counterfeit U.S. 5, 10, and twenty dollar coins, they are very close. We no longer just accept "slabbed" gold coins because of the difficulty weighing and measuring them as well as the number of counterfeits showing up from china (coincidentally the source for N.G.C. and P.C.G.S. shells and holographic seals) Old used coins individually measured, weighed, observed, and felt are the only good investment IMO. As for the hedge against inflation I say your on the right track as long as you can hold it in your hand, no ETFs see the m.f. global/j.p. morgan incident. Just be ready to dump the stuff when you feel right, don't try to ride it to the top. All that said I believe an actual physical business with sufficient supplies on hand providing a needed service/s will be worth more than stationary investments IF IF AND ONLY IF you have a secure location and security. I'm of the belief that a business that has the ability to run a year without resupply would be the cat ass so to speak. Don't write off silver but I wouldn't bother with much larger than dimes (a handful only at $2.75 each including the 10% premium in shop now, they don't last long) On gold we can not keep it in the shop for more than a day with a 10% over spot premium, tells me everything I need to know about the dollar right there.

Also of note nothing screams valuables like a big heavy safe.

Cashe but never cash.

Grudgie and all...

Think about a business you can do in the coming depression / collapse and buy the items you will need now for the successful execution of your business.

I open this to the forum and maybe it deserves a separate subject line but what are you going to do to make $$ or barter for your skills? I will start with a few things we plan to dabble in and have bought inventory to support the business...

> Reloading ammo,
> Sharpening things like, chain saw chains, scissors, knives, gardening tools, etc
> Selling seeds,
> Splicing rope, wire to rope and wire rope,
> Welding,
> Medical (My sister in law is a RN),
> Making beer and hard cider,

So what is going to be your profession in post collapse?

Prostitution.

Edit: Seriously, you have good points. I'm not planning on ivesting all my money in Gold. I will still have a solid base of cash and a job to make preps on.

I thought that my post appocalyptic profession would be to survive, but you bring up a good topic that would make a good thread. I do reload, and my Grandfather is soon to get me started in bee keeping so I could always learn to make mead. I plan to take welding/machining soon and later attend a gunsmithing school. I would like to enlist in the Navy as a Corpsman but I doubt I would make it due to my health. Sharpening is a good idea too. I never considered it a profession but it does seem like a good idea.

Damn son, $30,000 would buy a hell of a machine shop if that's your path.

Got a bug-out location?
Have well-water and backup power?
Do you have HAM radio and emergency communications?

30k is a shit load of money to waste on shiny yellow metal.

I have between $300 and $350 face value in junk silver. Of course im a coin collector so it was got before silver went crazy but its all merc dimes a few barber dimes and pre 64 quarters. Still I may be broke but I wont sell because it has become an important part of my preps. Gold I dont see much use for honestly I would and have gone into junk silver.

Grudgie as much as I dont like you and trust me I dont but if you cant find a chunk of land for 30 grand you arent looking we picked up 22 arces in a prepper paradise for 33000. it has 2 springs that we have found a nice stream running down the center and it just so happened to be in the middle of a prepper community (little bonus) but real estate is far better an investment than gold or silver.

Edit: that came off harsh im trying to like you, I really am because SP is a family.

It's true, there probably is a good location out there in my price range. Maby I have high standards in that I want it to be perfect, but I think it is mainly because of my age, I don't want to make any hasty decisions about where to settle down yet before my life's direction is a little more set in stone. I'm trying to figure all of this out. All I know for sure is that having all of my assets in USDs is scaring the jeepers out of me thanks to QE3 and 16 trillion+ debt.

Then in the mean time go junk silver, check craigslist (junk silver is 1964 and back quarters and dimes) last I heard it was 3 times face value maybe more now. But even at 4 times face your making money when you consider a silver dime is running about $3.00 each maybe more havent checked spot in months. But even still thats thats $.40 for $3.

That's what I was thinking.  30 grand would get you a prepper's paradise in most places.  You might have to move, but hell, just take that off the bottom line, bro.  If I had that much cash, I would not be living where I am right now.  I'd buy a preppers paradise and slowly move all my preps up there.  Seriously, man.  I'd have the land straight SETUP right now.

If i had 30k id buy a chunk of land so fast... id camp on that fucker if i had to... id feel so free knowing i have a peice of land that is all mine no matter what. Assuming i pay my property taxes of course  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at lol

But seriously... Any sizeable land is a dream come true like no other for me. All of the sudden you can put walking cheeseburgers on it... and plant those nasty green foods.... all of these things at your fingertips simply by owning dirt.

And finally... Dont you dare pull out gold or silver for trade if you run into me... its hard to laugh and keep a sight picture.

I confess I don't know much about the stock market. All I know is that bad times=expensive gold. And China or Russia no longer lending us money=bad times in my narrow framed world. Care to elaborate? Sureley gold won't drastically fall by hundreds of dollars agian any time soon.

Please keep in mind, as a prep you don't buy PM's to make money (An investment), you buy it to hold the value of today's money. Buy it, put it away and forget about it.

Here is an item to think about:

In 1971 a gallon of gas cost between 29? to 36? per. Today in NE PA gas costs $3.99 a gallon and $4.29 in the southern tier of NY. I heard it is between $4.50 & $5.00 a gallon in CA. If you take today's value of two pre '64 silver dimes, is equal to about $5.00. One quarter is about $6.50. Back in '71 they were were worth 10? & 25? respectively.

One ounce of silver (Today's silver spot), 14 pre '64 dimes or $36- will fill my wife's Mini Cooper.

My point is... PM's just hold the value of your dollar (s) the day you trade it... into the future.

i do care to elaborate

there is absolutely no fucking way your preps are close to squared away enough for you to buy gold, cause lets face it yall buying shit with gold after a collapse is a losing investment
food water ammo guns gas diesel medical supplies drugs booze shit paper feminine products will all be infinitely more valuable than gold and easier to trade or sell for other things you need than gold ever will be in todays market or after a collapse
