http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/2011/05/28/20110528tucson-swat-team-kills-ex-marine-jose-guerena.html

There have been several home invasions over the past couple of years where the criminals or gangs kick the door in yelling "police".   They then proceed to rape, rob and kill.

If LE ever wants to talk to me for any reason they had better knock and they won't have a problem.

My decision is that anyone that comes into my house unannounced by kicking in my door or any other way is gonna have a serious problem.  Especially at 4 in the morning.  They'll find themselves trapped in a hallway with no good way to get out of.  If they're cops they better make damn sure they throw a badge under the bedroom door quick as I'll be instructing them to do.

Ahh gotcha. Not my initiall thoughts at all lol. Sorta thought you were taking a cheap shot at me. Trying to imply something about training or something like that  :-[  Not sure why.

On that note I fully agree. I have read a storry or 2 similar to the one you posted. Diddnt read it, but from the title. I think it was the former marine who had an AR and the cops took down the wrong house. The kid was defending himself, n the cops shot him in the hallway. At 4am or any AM. If its the cops I better see blue and red flashing lights outside. Like you my hallway is definatly a funnel, no badge, then they get the door prize, 1,798 grains of green tip, or whatever it takes to make them no longer a threat. If more than one, I'll divided it equally to the best of my abilities ofcourse. Any loud band in the AM I take as a serious threat

LOL!  Really!  No man, that's not me.  I'm not into cheap shots.  I'm not sure what your training is but I hope you have plenty of it.   :)

i thought it might be a good idea to put paracord across the hallway about ankle high so if someone charges u they will hopefully trip and fall

I have a similar idea except my design uses a high strength gut and fish hooks(I'll be adding this in my poisons post). Yeah you would have to make sure everyone in your habitat is on board and briefed if you would intend to do that.

I always find these discussions amusing.  In the UK where I'm from its tricky to get more than a double barreled shotgun.   On the up-side - its less likely that an invader would have a shooter.  My permanent residence is in the middle of the most boring middle-class semi rural English location you can imagine.  We asked about crime when we first bought the house and our neighbour scratched his head for a while then replied "Oh yes! There was a crime about five years ago when Mrs X got her deckchairs stolen from the front garden, but they were found an hour later being used by a couple of drunks to sleep it off!"

So far so good.

When I lived in London it was the opposite, I regularly couldn't get into my house for forensic tape across the junction.  One bad summer there were two separate stabbings and a shooting literally on my doorstep, plus a machine gun attack on a shop opposite.  Sirens ALL night every night :( Always felt safe though - it was Turkish gangsters battling over the smack trade, or black kids doing their gang thing.  Nonetheless I locked the doors and kept a crowbar by the bed.

Now I'm in living in the Congo - it feels different, and now I wish I had a gun.  They seem to be illegal and, well, there are reasons I don't want to go there, even though I have heard you can get an AK47 for 50$

We have pretty good security but the bars could be ripped off with a scaffolding pole or a rope attached to a vehicle.  The shatterproof film on the windows would add another minute or two delay.   We also have a Safe Room with reinforced door - but the walls on either side could be kicked down in no time.  My active resistance plan involves some combination of throwing all the valuables out of the window, a very bright torch, paintball marker loaded with marbles ( I have a bunch of refillable caps which I plan to put pepper in... ), pepper spray (bear strength) and... the old crowbar :P  Also got a crossbow which looks badass and might be a good deterrent (but not much cop in a fire-fight...  Several longbows - which might be handy once I have made some arrows.  Ammonia (would poke a hole in the lid and squirt it).  The Wife *eek*.

Trip wire sounds good - I think I might go one step further and stock some razor wire to fill the stair-way with - much easier to defend over/ through that.  And if they have guns... hmmm... escape out the window?   Grrrr.... back to wanting a gun (although a .68 cal marble at 200fps might ruin your day - and I can get off maybe 7 rps...)

With the trouble here having a firearm I know a number of farmers who use slightly modified markers filled with solid glass balls for home defence so I can vouch for the effectiveness of that. I also got the idea of the fish hook tripwire from them. I have found a way to get my firearm permit so now I'm saving up. I've decided on a .38 snub nose and I can explain why. It has greater stopping power than the trusty 9mm, rounds are much cheaper than a .44/.45 and the noise is awesome (in the original sense of the word). My logic behind using something so loud is: A- Most criminals (especially in our area) are opportunistic and cowards so firing off a warning shot with that would make most high tail out (you don't really want to shoot anyone here if you can't help it), the same goes for animals. B- the noise is pretty much guaranteed to wake the neighbours. The snub nose is also small and light enough to conceal and carry on hikes without even you knowing it's there.

Yeah - a friend said exactly the same thing.
"....Wouldn't get me there without at least THREE guns!"

digininja - good to hear a pb marker plus marbles isn't entirely ineffective!  I must do some 'proper' tests with watermelons or something.

Here's a video I worked on (as SFX technician) showing eggs being destroyed by various things: knife, mallet, spoon, bb gun, air rifle, pistol crossbow and pb marker with marbles!

And how hard is it to carry a concealed pistol there?
I imagine a lot of loose fitting clothing shirts constantly untucked.

What kind of situation could you imagine where where you would get "caught" possessing one that you can't bribe yourself out of...?

That is true.  Hmm...

Now - the thing is I've fired a shot gun many times - hunting rabbits and ducks mostly.  Also worked as Armourer's assistant on a few films - fired, even stripped all sorts of weapons - but they are all imitation, de-acs or blank firers.  I've never fired an actual bullet!!!!  Can I come and stay with one of you guys - get some time on a range? :)

I've always got a couch free but the selection for ranges near me is slim...

How does that work in the Congo? people just shoot in the bush? Are there ranges? Would they be safe?

Wow I just realized it's like you're on an other planet to me... I've got absolutely no point of refference.

Granted you have a strong internet connection Youtube has ton's of beginner handgun instructional video's. buy yourself a toy gun a practice with it.

  I may take you up on your offer one day.  And likewise we have a sofa here should you ever end up in this part of town  :)  actually its rather nice - we could give you a spare room, swimming pool, razor wire around the garden (not as pretty as roses but hey)

So, I've been asking around a little - there's no public ranges.

There are hunting reserves - left over from Belgian Colonial times.  But tricky to get to (any roads the Belgians built are long gone).

So that's the route: hunting / hunting rifle.  At least it appears I could be entirely legal this way, and get some practice.

Actually getting hold of a rifle here... hmmm.... more research needed.   Could maybe import one... again not sure how, license-wise.

The actual paperwork required here  is anyone's guess.  Normally there is a whole string of people wanting their 'petit envelope'.

You are right - in the meantime I should get some airsoft pistols - and find some folks to practice tactics with (I've watched the youtube vids  ;) )  But I want the noise, the recoil, the danger too :p

I could probably find a spot for you for a couple days in S. Georgia.  Range is not far away, firearm selection is rusty old break open 22 and black powder 36 navy pistol.  Rest sank in boating accident in the 6000 foot deep water near an oil derrick in the Gulf.  But I might know a friend who has a friend . . ..

This comment is for everyone... Firearms are easy to make at home.

All of the components are easy to buy separately and with a minimal amount of milling; you will have the firearm of your dreams. Even weapons that may have had their fire pins altered are easy to fix with spare parts that you can buy anywhere on the internet.

I can not speak for other countries however here in the USofA, you are breaking no laws by having parts. It's when you put them all together when you might get in a little hot water.  ;)

TrailingSpouse,  what is considered a "hunting rifle" there? If the definition is somewhat loose, you might be able to get away with more than you think. For instance, AR-15s are not legal in Canada, but an M1 Garand is. That rifle is still a battle rifle in its own right. It is semi-automatic, has an 8-rd en bloc clip for fast reloads, and fires a powerful cartridge capable of killing large game at several hundred yards.

Another option might be an M1A variant. They can come with 5-rd, 10 - rd, 20 - rd and 30-rd magazines, so if you could label it as a hunting rifle with a 5 or 10 round magazine, you could purchase some 20 rd mags for a just in case scenario, and only use them if the government has lost control and you're on your own. Or you could just get two 10 rd mags, and utilize the stripper clip function for quick reloads.

Another plus is that both those rifles can visually pass as hunting rifles from a distance, if you have a flush fitting magazine.

Those are just a couple of examples that I know of, and there may be other ways to legally maximize your options via technicalities.

Rah I love you post because it's very sincere, but Mr.Spouse is in central africa.
American legal weapons jargon means little to nothing outside the first world.
Even if the Congo has a fastidious bureaucrat in charge of small arms policy who writes up the laws the enforcement of those arbitrary dictates are not likely to happen.
The only thing Mr.Spouse in all likely hood has to be weary of is the weapons policy of the compound/building/gated neighborhood he lives in and your random street cop looking to make an extra buck on the side by "doing his job".

Thanks Nemo, JohnyMac, Nemo, rah, thatGuy  :)

The laws are confusing here.   Nobody is sure of even the basic traffic rules for a junction:  priority for traffic from the right, unless you are within two blocks north of the main strip then its priority to those going parallel to the strip, but if you have a big car or big balls then you have priority :p  Its worse than Cairo!  Last Sunday we drove 25k out to a Hash... I saw so many RTAs (two rolled cars and a mini bus with crushed roofs - dozens of minor prangs) and sadly, two mangled dead people.  Had to emergency stop when some fucker forced me out of my lane towards a pile of bricks (The mind boggles - bricks on the highway would be a news item in the UK!  They'll probably still be there if I go back next month...) The warning cones here are made of concrete. There are spikes in the road to stop you changing lanes (Very effective but.....?!?!?!?)  The police wave people through red lights (they are watching out for the right kinds of vehicles to fleece).  I've had spikes thrown under the car for stopping over a non-existent line - I drove away when they tried to get me to pull over.  It goes on..........

Just checked out GunPolicy.org
Yes - confusing!!!  Just asking for clarity on that kind of information could get me in all kinds of bother.
Interesting that the GunPolicy says you can get a license for a handgun.  But 'background checks' lol, nobody really gives a shit - anything goes if you pay the right people.  The system is designed that way (you can't have the police arresting people for breaking the law when the lawmakers are doing the same)  I also note the number of different agencies involved.  That's bad news.   Being white it would undoubtedly cost ALOT to move those checks along, and you would have to keep paying to 'renew'.

Making.... hmmm - always wanted the excuse for buying a milling machine  :D  Maybe could make something like a multi-barreled muzzle-loading 'swivel gun' (actually you wouldn't need a milling machine for this!) mounted on a tripod behind razor wire :p   Muzzle loading because of the ammo - I make a very nice BP among other things :)  Speaking of which I mustn't forget defensive grenades, claymores etc.  Got plenty of transferable skills in this area from my time in film SFX - and its always good to go with what you know eh?

Maybe I should stop posting on this stuff ;)

Somewhat of an off hand comment but I just handled a Remington R15 for the first time and I think I'm in love. Being in (South) Africa most of my assault rifle experience is with the R1 and AK47. Used a few AR15 and they're nice, R1 and AK47 are heavy and cumbersome but cheap and effective. This Remington was just in a class of it's own. Light enough for Mrsninja, small enough to tuck under a full length coat and it doesn't LOOK like a "murder gun", I could very easily get away with it being a hunting rifle. I may have to sell my car for one though.

Why can I only modify a few of my posts, not all? I wasn't focusing when I made my last comment and need to make a minor ammendment. The Remington R15 IS a hunting rifle. Even though in it's core it is designed and built around the M16/AR15 it's function is hunting big game (according to the manufacturer).

That "defender" looks kick ass btw @tspouse.
