I was watching an episode of the Munsters last night and they had a perfect place to hide stuff. Their had a carpeted runner on their stairs and the stairs opened in the middle. One or two stairs could be cut out along the side seams of the carpet and under the stairs lip. These cuts would be almost impossible to notice. The stair case would have a full length backing on them. Full size rifles would fit as would preps.
What do you think? Would it work?

Mmmmm. I have been dealing with this dilemma off and on for several years. Overall I have decided that caches best meet my needs.
If you are a "one and done" or "one is none...two is one" or "don't put all of your eggs in one basket" mindset I would recommend several caches about your AO.
All of the cache materials are readily available at your local hardware/lumber store. I would recommend that you pay cash to cover your trail.
Just a thought...Isn't it amazing that we have to worry about .gov talking our stuff on top of the everyday run of the mill crooks? :hiding:

Almost JM. I am one of those who think 3 is 2, 2 is 1, 1 is none. There is a day or 2 a month I have to think that over twice.
I am even considering remembering it when I am remembering it. Someone I trust once told me I have enough stuff for the zombie invasion. I agreed but then said yeah, almost.

It's a neat idea, the part of the stair the you kick with your toe is called the riser while the part you walk on is the tread, I know.. wildly complicated :P
So you're talking about making a tread that opens like a hope chest so you can squirrel away your hopes and changes?

Exactly. I've been in a couple of houses where I could spot the false wall, the room appears smaller than the room next to it. And a wall enclosing a stair case is a dead giveaway that something is there.
When I was a kid I had to go into a closet to get to the door to my bedroom.

The only problem with that is the center stringer..

cool idea. I've often thought of stairs as wasted space that can be much better utilised.
if purely for storage I prefer the idea of individual sliders.
beds are also ideal for a hidden stash, your guests could be sleeping right on top of your preps and never know.
-
don't know why both attachments came through as the stairs. let's try again.

Hey Ken, hey Ken.. remember when I tried to talk you into making a bed frame from 5g buckets of rice?! Remember?

WOW. I love that. My problem is I live in a ranch house but maybe I can do the attic stairs.
-
I'm incredibly envious of you 'mericans with your attics and basements. I cannot figure out why that never took off here.
-
My watertable is like 5' soo no basements here ;)
-
Interesting TG. I would have never though the water table being so close to the surface in a arid area of the country.
thedigininja, not all houses in the States has a basement and or attic. Both are nice features though. Our house in Rhode Island has neither. Our cabin Pennsylvania has a basement but no attic.
Basement = More space in the house for expansion ala, pool room, more bedrooms, storage, workshop, root cellar, etc
Attic = Storage, keeps the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer, etc. My grandparents had a fan that sucked air up into the attic from the main part of the house. During the day they would open the windows on the north and east side of the house and keep the windows lowered on the south and west sides of the house. There house was always cool with no use a air conditioner.

Yeah, I'm in the bottom of the second largest rift valley in the world.. so as dry as it is we are quite temperate in this little valley..
The fan is a 'whole house fan' and they are making a comeback believe it or not! I'm actually pricing one out for a customer right now.

Lol, vaguely. If I recall, it was back when I was renting a room and didn't have much space.

'All you need is like two sheets of underlay, 28 buckets and a dust ruffle dude!'
