I tend to ignore commentary from the British, mostly because I don't believe they understand the American psyche. But then again, I don't understand the British very well either, so I guess it works both ways.
From my experience, it seems that folks in rural areas are generally well prepared. They don't consider themselves to be "preppers", but just well prepared for emergencies, but that goes with living in the country. Rural folks know how to repairs things and they are generally self-reliant because of necessity. When it takes an hour or so to run into town to pick up a part, or buy groceries, then rural people make do with whatever they have on hand. And the more you have on hand, the easier it is to make do. Seems pretty logical to me.
Without veering too far off the original post, this foundation of self reliance is part of the core of rural folks, and it is reflected in their political leanings. Gotta go...time to fire up the radios for the 1300h net!
