Forgotten Prep: Rat & Mousetraps
« on: September 25, 2013, 07:18:00 AM »
As a reminder:

I've noticed that I have an insurgence of mice this time of year at this location.  Due to previous years lesson, I now have ample mousetraps stocked and on standby.  So far this year I've lost only one bag of blue corn chips to their furry disease ridden asses.  The crinkle sound of the plastic bag coming from my pantry tipped me off late one evening... which commenced this year's annual campaign of spine-snapping-gut-splattering death.

I'm aware that we all know to store our long term foods preps is buckets and totes, BUT these bastards will still crawl, chew & shit on whatever immediately available foods (for the day/week/etc.) you might have laying about... this will be even more costly in a SHTF situation.  Evidently, these little ninjas can climb smooth walls??... so don't think that they can't get to that top shelf.

So for a negligible investment of approx. 50? per trap, you had better stock up now!

PS:  To hell with cheese.  Peanut butter works like crack.

PPS:  Forgot about keeping a house cat around to help with this problem.  Most of them are lazy & worthless and will most likely eat more than they are worth... kinda like nowadays average kids & teenagers.

Great points SK!

On another point though I 50% disagree with you.

We have two cats. One like you said is a lazy bum while the other, Max the Maximum Manx, is a very affective hunter.

Max kills mice, birds, frogs and once a half grown rabbit. He kills them and brings them to MrsMac. Up at the cabin inside we leave the cellar door open. Both cats may go down to the cellar to explore but Max, this time of year comes back with a prize.

We also have mice traps and you are 100% correct - Peanut butter is like crack to those small rodents.

@JM

That's why I stated "house cat."  Any cat that stays indoors enough of the time to do the job (indoors), is most likely a lazy-ass also.  My last cat was a free-roaming 50/50 indoor-outdoor cat.  After about 2-3 years of age, his hunting prowess* he was known for severely waned... even though he was healthy and strong.  Outdoor-only cats are great for thinning the herd outside... but once the mice get inside, traps are your only viable option.

* Besides the usual squirrels, birds, & frogs... he delivered a half grown o'possum and even the neighbors pet cat to my door step once (I never told them about it  :-X).  I think that was when he lost lost his desire for smaller things and focused on killing/fighting anything closer to his size.  He didn't give a shit about a mouse after that.

No I got ya' and not to  :trolling: however Max is an inside cat who is very crafty at getting outside

He pushes out window screens, pushes the screen door open if it isn't latched, charges the door when my wife tries to open the door with packages in her arms, etc.  :lmfao: He is quite the smart critter.

Max is now 15 years old and still is a hunter. Our wood stove chimney attracts starling's in the spring like S$%^T draws flies. He sits in front of the wood stove waiting and waiting and then all of a sudden he starts talking which is a sign for MrsMac to open the wood stove door.

When MrsMac opens the door a bird will fly out and Max 'will get 'em every single time! In his younger days I have seen him jump 8-9' feet in the air to grab 'em. While this is happening our lazy cat Emma, just follows Max around meowing. Sometimes he will put the bird down so she can play with it. Nine times out of ten, Emma just pokes it around and then the bird flies off. Max then has to re-catch it.

To your point though SK, Max is a special cat not akin to most "house cats."

we have mouse issues..in which,i've come across a idea  way for me to catch them indoors.and maybe a idea way to catch them outdoors as well..first one(link),i use indoors.they do catch mice as is.(but) i've gone with a additive.i had mice get into a bag of short grain white rice, and a bag of coconut flakes.so i mixed them together.and added some to the middle of the glue traps, when ever i put a new one out.the second one is a video of whats known as a redneck mouse trap..and the pic is the one i just made this morning..
