The Jakarta Pandemic by Steven Konkoly
« on: November 05, 2011, 05:38:22 AM »
is a great read just finished it. IMO one of the most realistic and 'down to earth' books on WROL out there, and i have read a few.

its about a family in southern Maine riding out a Flu Pandemic with 2 neighbors that formed a hasty group when shit went south.

not alot of shooting, but alot of story and dialogue leading up to the shooting, which IMO made it veeery realistic.

a book every one of you should read.

I read it too. I thought it was ok. It certainly wasn't the next patriots or lights out.

It does go into things some of us might not be prepared for, mainly a pandemic.
It's better to have it and not need it ...

I just finished reading this book, I liked it, but isn't very good.
The first half is slow, but then it gets fun when things screw up in the neighborhood.

Now some rant about it, contains minor spoilers...

Quote
The main character is a marine, but you can't believe how much fucked up stuff he does...
Like keeping weapons unloaded, threatening people with empty guns, not shooting when he needs to (like home invasion), going out of the house into what clearly is an ambush... I wanted to kill the guy so many times, is the fucking end of the world and he wants to be politically correct no matter what.
And the wife is a pain in the ass, constantly bashing guns but asking his husband to kill the bad guys and when the guy finally decides to take action, the fucking wife start saying "ohh you're enjoying this", and then you have to listen her vegetarian crap.

End of rant

If you can get "an evaluation copy" read the book otherwise, just keep browsing for a better one.

Another book you guys might enjoy is "One Second After".  Not really a manual type piece but there's some good stuff in there to get you thinking.

one second after was a great read. IMHO I would rank thusly. One second after, lights out, patriots. But thats just between those three books. Ill have to try to find a used copy of this Jarkata book. If your looking for a fun read you might try the Zombie fallout series. It isnt the best writen series. But its a pretty fun story.

Another one I haven't seen mentioned yet is Lucifers Hammer.  It had some pretty good moments in it.

Ok I finished this book last night. On a JohnyMac scale of 1-5 with 5 being perfect it was a "2".

Now with that said I did get some prepping info out of the book and worth a read. Worth a read but if you have other things to read or you need to clean the toilet bowl in your house do thouse things first.

Now that I have gotten that off my chest I am a true believer that you can learn just as much when things don't go right as you can when everything goes right. I suggest we take some time to spell out what the hero's and heroins did right in the book and what they didn't do right.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS BOOK OR ARE PLANNING TO READ IT STOP HERE! I do not want to spoil the ending for you.  :))

What the neighborhood did wrong (Because this is more fun to write about):

> Communication before, during and after the pandemic was poor to non existent. There should have been at the minimum a
daily conf call for roll call purposes
> There should have been a road block set up at the road to the housing development and roving patrols
> A inventory of firearms should have been conducted so the neighbore would know who was armed and with what
> Believed that "they" would be taken care of by better prepared neighbors or the government

What the neighborhood did right

> Did not meet face to face which helped not to spread the flu
> Moved their wood supply inside
> Interviewed folks and added to abandon houses folks with skills that could help the neighborhood

OK gents what did I miss?

HEAVILY SPOILER LOADED POST!!!!!!!!!

Hey JohnyMac, i agree with some things you mention and other I don't, I'll quote your post and reply in green

Quote
What the neighborhood wrong (Because this is more fun to write about):

> Communication before, during and after the pandemic was poor to non existent. There should have been at the minimum a daily conf call for roll call purposes
The neighborhood was split in two, a group met regularly face to face, but the protagonists choose not to go.
Considering they still had working phones a conf call as you suggest would be a great idea.

> There should have been a road block set up at the road to the housing development and roving patrols
Agree with the road block, but there wasn't much people to man the patrols, and you risk contact with infected people.

> A inventory of firearms should have been conducted so the neighbore would know who was armed and with what
I don't like this one... particularly in the neighborhood  depicted in this book where your worst enemies were the neighbors

> Believed that "they" would be taken care of by better prepared neighbors or the government
Agree, typical sheep thinking

What the neighborhood did right

> Did not meet face to face which helped not to spread the flu
Not all of them did this, all the guys except for the protagonist continued to meet, they even implemented a baby sitting service that spread the flu like crazy.

> Moved their wood supply inside
Good move

> Interviewed folks and added to abandon houses folks with skills that could help the neighborhood
This one was good, but with a nice roadblock they shouldn't had so much visitors as they had

now its been a hot minute since i read this. i thought it was a pretty realistic book in the sense that the main guy (forgot his name) didnt just go around 'shooting first and asking questions later' he tried to defuse every situation he got in as best he could. now with that being said there are some parts i can remember i would have shot to kill.

and another thing, if something huge did pop off and it required R&S and security patrols to keep your family, house, neighborhood safe i dont think there would be to many 'average joes' out there that would be willing to jump into those patrols. and if they were game, i wouldnt want someone with no experience in the matter running patrols, or even 1 experienced guy leading idk 3-6 non experienced guys.

had more to add but getting released at 2230 because theres a missing acog and .45 from the armory, and getting the piss smoked out of me for 45mins really takes it out of you.
