Ugh. Why must she be our only real alternative to the Tangerine Menace?
I don't know that we'll break up just yet. There are too many ideologies at play here. While that's an interesting concept, Jackalope, I think in a time of globalization and high-speed communication and commerce, I really think that if a civil war came it'd be an all-or-nothing. Unless of course it took decades to win and groups split off based on wins and losses and such.
I think that, as frustrating as many of these issues are, most of us still think of ourselves as Americans first, and fill-in-the-blank second. There is also a lot of overlap. The middle class and the poor - and there's almost as vast a divide between those two groups as there is between both groups and the oligarchy - both span most of the littler groups like evangelicals, liberals, etc. At this point there's nothing unifying enough to split groups into two or even three major camps.
I don't doubt that a civil war could happen, but right now not even this ugly, divisive election would unite enough people to start so much as a civil skirmish, much less a war.
