Once there was the quiet suburb of B-Town. Over the years, B-Town had brought in C's to do work for them, but the B's didn't like C's. They were the third letter of the Alphabet. Inferior. God made them that way. The C's worked for them, but were not allowed to live in B-Town, run for local office, vote or intermarry. One day the A's told the B's that they were wrong, and they had to let the C's live in B-Town. However, they were permitted to use "reasonable regulations" to tell the C's what jobs they could have, where in B-Town they could live, what buses to ride, what water they could drink, etc. The A's said that as long as the C's got to live in B-Town, anything else that happened was ok with them.
Is this some silly story for pre-schoolers I pulled out of my hat?
No. This is exactly what happened in 1896 when the United States Supreme Court ruled, 7-1, in favor of upholding racial segregation in the state of Louisiana. The case was called Plessy vs Ferguson. (The only dissenting opinion was John Harlan of Kentucky. Woo!)
What's this got to do with gun control?
"Reasonable regulations."
