shotgun ammo

I know most of everyone on here has a shotgun and it is not your primary. How much ammo do you stock for a shotgun when you have your ar/AK as a primary.

I love my shotguns. I appreciate and respect the shotguns capabilities so much I do everything in my power to stock as much as I can for them.

Right now I have a little over 500 rounds of 00 in storage.  My thinking is that's more than I should need but that 12ga will be a higher value barter item than .22.  I've got plenty of those too.

Edit:  I thought I'd expand on this just a little.  I also consider being able to show someone how to make a cut shell thus making the rough equivalent of a slug a barter item.  That's what they used in the old days before slugs were invented.  Knowledge like anything else can be a barter item.

Every now and again you will see me post direct numbers of what I picked up.

I don't like to post direct of what I have so.

I'm looking at above 250 slugs
Above 250  ( 00 ) 
Above 50 3" Mix of 00 & slugs
above 250 bird shot.

I think that depends on how you'd be using it.  For someone like Ken who uses it for a primary I'd say 1K would just be a start. 

I see the 12 ga as a just in case things get really bad gun.  Mines aluminum because if society would totally crumble it would be in a saddle that attaches to my alice or vest.  It would be used while investigating or foraging buildings.  Which is why I use a 2 point on my AK, so I can sling it around out of the way.  That's another reason I'm thinking of putting a pistol grip on the shotty instead of the standard stock.  (Other than it kicks the shit out of me too.)

Note:  Things would have to crumble all the way down before you could go out in full retard.

For someone with my plan I think 1K would be alright but overkill.  Of course you could also use the spare ammo as barter.

The shotguns main point in my weapons roles, would be as a wrol HD/ BOL Defense/ hunting. It would not leave the wire unless we have to evac. The A.O. or to go hunting if i was very desperate.....

Most work would be handled by my m4 or my glock 19

I would think 500 would be plenty for your case but it all depends on what you feel secure with.  I'd bet 12 ga is going to be one of those rounds you will be able to scavenge for.  People won't be carrying too many of them if they have to leave quick.  And they are pretty common.

1K in general at first IMO
Then 1K each eventually.

I agree with sledge the shotgun is my brush gun & my " oh scheisse " gun.

In my world It sucks but three firearms are needed on any patrol Primary in my arms secondary on my leg & shotgun on my back or if I have another person they are running it primary. The shotguns capabilities are so broad and so important I refuse to go into battle without one if I have the choice.

The load I really really like to have is #4 3" magnum.
41 pellets of bad ass.
