We have a new member of the Mac household - Her name is Dorothy.

Dorothy is a Dutch Shepherd that we adopted from NADSR (North America Dutch Shepherd Rescue).

Dorothy is 1 1/2 years old, likes cats (Scared of ours :-) ), likes kids and likes to play...Boy O' boy does she like to play.

I don't know who/where she came from but she is certainly a city/suburbia girl. She is leery of sheep & goats, doesn't know that you need to drop your tail when you crawl under an electrified fence and will only go outside at night if I am with her.

She knows basic commands like: Sit, lay, potty, come and when we walk daily, she walks along side of me without a lead/leash.

Below are a few pic's.

A dog was one of my last preps on the "A" list. I was leaning towards a Belgium Shepherd because I feel that German Shepherds just have too many problems due to inter breeding. I was also concerned with a large dog around MrsMac who has trouble walking on a good day.

My good friend CJS06 suggested that I check out Dutchies. He called them sixty-five pounds of heated missile in a security situation, and have not been interbred.

Well they run north of a $1,000- and I just can't afford that right now so I checked out NADSR organization. I filled out a application, was interviewed and became a pest. I started this process last January.

I was very specific on what I was looking for and didn't settle for less when a dog became available. I know that the good lord had the right dog out there for MrsMac and I.

The only issue we are having is MrsMac's control of Dorothy at the moment.

When I am around she minds MrsMac about 50% of the time. When I am not around, that percentage goes up to above 90%. My good wife just rolls her eyes when she says, "Dorothy come" and she doesn't. I say Dorothy come and she runs over to me and sits to my left side in heel position.

I chuckle and say, "It must be you."  :lmfao:

Oh well - All will sort it's self out in time.

Say hi to Dorothy!

Johnny I am so happy for you. I am also glad to hear that you picked Dorothy up from the rescue group.  IF you want you can always get some more training with her.

Thanks Chris!

She only knows basic commands at the moment and would greatly appreciate any training as long as it is within our budget.

Two quick funning stories that happened on our morning trek.

We were checking the four deer blinds along the middle section of our property. The blinds are located off a main deer route and within good shots of the sub deer paths that bucks use.

We came upon a rotten tree that obviously bears had been ripping apart looking for grubs. There was a big pile of bear scat in the middle of the path and Dorothy started barking at it while scanning the raspberry bushes that lined one side of the deer route. As we walked away Dorothy kept nervously scanning our "6" while snorting.

Hey Dorothy is a city girl...How does she know about bears?  :lmfao:

We broke into a field about 400 yards from the cabin where our last deer stand is. As we were making our way back to the dirt road and then the cabin, Dorothy squirmed under an electric fence to visit the Highland Cattle on the other side.

I was almost to the dirt road and called Dorothy and rather than squirming under the fence she ran and jumped over it with one big ass bound. WOW!

I thought I was watching a Rin-Tin-Tin episode.  Wholly crap Bat Man!

Or...Well not quite but pretty cool :-D

That is great!  She is already working to protect.  She may not know what a bear is but I am sure she "understands" a large predator.  She will continue to learn.  It is amazing seeing these dogs work. Her jumping over the fence doesnt surprise me. Dutchies can climb trees and easily jump onto or over some fairly impressive objects.  A friend has one that jumps up and sits along fence rails, more like you would expect from a cat.  They are amazing dogs.

I have a 14 pound Yorkie now.  He is king of dogs and if Dorothy eats him in one bite (not taking 2 or more) he will chew his way out the back end dragging guts behind him.  Or so I tell people.  We are at Myrtle Beach today and he could find no dinosaurs to eat so he went shark hunting and got a big one for dinner.  He would not share so I had to eat a burger.  Or a couple 7 year old boys about 3 campsites away learned and seemed to believe.

But he is 11 and when he goes on to wait for me at the pearly gates, I will be getting another canine companion and was figuring a Shepard of German descent.  But the Dutch/Belgian line looks real real interesting now.

That is one fine hounddog there JM.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

God created Man, Col. Sam Colt made him equal, John Moses Browning turned equality to perfection, Gaston Glock turned perfection into plastic fantastic junk.

Congrats, John!

Our new puppy, Tessa, who was dropped off in our yard a month ago at about 0500, is a real trip. She is a Shepherd mix of some kind, but I don't think she is going to be much bigger than my knee. Not sure if I should consider training her in any kind of defense/alert role, as I'm not sure what the other breed is that mated with the Shepherd.  :-\

I had an Australian Shepherd a few years ago, Buck, who was very smart and could jump over a 5 foot fence. He apparently didn't realize that he couldn't play chicken with cars, though. He lasted about 4 months.  ???

Train her for defense.  She might not be a take down dog but my Yorkie will distract sufficient to let me get several rounds on target at my leisure should the need arise.  Granted mine weighs 14 pounds but is a bit less than 8 inches tall at the shoulder.

If not defense surely the alert part.  Few things scare people more or quicker than a reasonable size dog bark.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I hope she does well...I'm no dog expert, but it seems that many people believe the breed determines the ultimate level of training you can achieve. I don't know what breed mix she truly is, so I'm left wondering...
