CONGRATULATIONS Gap!

With that said, there are a few folks that are home schooling there children on this forum. It would be great if they were to document their journey for the men & women who will follow.

I will PM 'em to nudge them along.  ;)

Thanks jmac!! The other thing I have been thinking because he's getting a rifle on the day of his birth, I was thinking a cricket .22, but he will out grow it fast so maybe a 10/22. Or just go a head and build him a little .223 ak? My mind set and the way the men in my family are the built gun would have a lot more sentimental value and will keep him from pawning it in college for a case of beer  assuming anything like that will be around at that time. I fear it won't I fear he is going to have a much harder life than I have had and will have to grow up fast.

I still have my first rifle which I got on my 8th B-Day. It is a Marlin single shot 100 series. She now sports a 4x weaver scope and is a nail driver to this day.

Congratulations!!  Have you looked into a doula?  They can definitely help you through the process of home birth.  DONA can be a great resource to learn about doulas, what they can offer and where to find one.

I don't know much about homeschooling, but I know there are a LOT more resources out there than there used to be.  People are homeschooling for all sorts of reasons these days.  Just Google home schooling and you get a ton of organizations with information on the laws, techniques, book recommendations, etc.

The one thing I want to caution about is the non-vaccination.  This is a hot button/soap box topic for me, so I'll try not to get too preachy, but don't let bad science and dumb actresses influence your view of vaccinations.  Remember that if you choose not to vaccinate, you are choosing to risk the lives of all the people around your kid.  My mother is immune-compromised and literally someone with the flu could kill her, much less someone with mumps or measles or whooping cough, etc.  Please reconsider any anti-vaxxer propaganda you've read.  Vaccines today are reliably safe and effective.  *steps off soap box*

Congratulations again!

I don't have kids, but friends who all started out doing only cloth diapers, eventually went with store diapers as things progressed. Kudos if you and the wife can do it, but just saying....

Beside that, congrats to you and the family GAP.  :bravo:

We've already butted heads on the vaccination thing with nothing gained but concussions on both sides, so I'll let that one go.  I'm just tickled shitless that the baby appears to be human and has his father's tiny hands ;D

Enough razzing, on to the real bidness.  A number of my friends that have tried the home birth route were rerouted to the hospital during labor because of the difficulty with a first child, especially when the mom is petite.  I also knew some folks that were far enough away from a hospital, that they had the doc give them a tutorial and some supplies in case the baby came on the way to the hospital, which it did!  To hear it told, the husband couldn't find the clip the doc gave him for the umbilical cord, so he improvised with a chip bag clip.  The point of all that is to have plans and backup plans for everything, cause I don't know of anyone with a child that was able to follow their birthing plan.  I'd suggest using this opportunity to learn as much as you can from doctors, midwives, child birthing classes, etc... and stock up on some supplies.

For cloth diapers, get more of them than you can ever imagine using.  If you want to use cloth wipes as well, buy a few yards of flannel and cut it into squares and sew the edges so they last.  Also, don't bother with the regular crib sheets, get the easily detachable ones that button or zip on because little boys can soak sheets several times a night and crib sheets are a giant pain in the ass to change.

Buy a cricket for the kiddo now.  By the time he's big enough for a .22 rifle, it will be exciting for the two of you to go together and buy one.  As far as the AK, get the parts now, but wait to build it with him-- there's more pride in ownership when you build it yourself. Hell, maybe by then you will have realized the error of your ways and will build an AR with him instead :p

Auntie thatGirl is gonna send you a teething toy that is all the rage among parents and is BPA free

The fact that your scared means that you care, which is the most important thing.  You're gonna be an awesome daddy  :bravo:

Modified:  I forgot to address food.  Here's a link that has some good info such as what they can eat at different ages and has some recipes for baby food:   http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/babymenua.htm#.UkNgkYaRD5Q

You never outgrow any rifle.  :gunner:

Even if he becomes too large to effectively use it, it will always hold sentimental value, no matter what it is.

Oh, and congratulations.  :bravo:

Congrats, GAP! Great news!

I was homeschooled and attended private school for several years growing up, and in all those years I used a homeschool curriculum. The program that seemed to function best, and which is HIGHLY respected, is A Beka curriculum. It is very challenging, and it actually teaches you. I outperformed most of my class when I returned to public school, and that was with minimal effort. In fact, I got so bored with the standard public school curriculum that I stopped caring altogether, which hurt my performance for my senior year and early college years. You want a curriculum that enables you, the parent, to understand what you are teaching your child, but one that also provides a challenge to the child throughout his academic career. Let's face it, if provided the proper environment and tools, our kids may become more educated than we are. Probably the best way to ensure this is to purchase every teacher's guide that comes with the material. The better the teacher understands the material, the easier it will be for the student to learn everything he/she needs to know, and excel at it.

The drawback with A Beka, for you, might be that 1) it can be expensive, and 2) it is Christian-oriented. In Science texts, there are references to the Creationist argument regarding the origin of life, and there may be other references I don't remember (it's been a decade since I last used the curriculum). I'm sure the Social Studies texts also contain Christian references or biases inherent in the writing. However, they are also very patriotic/pro-traditional American. You might decide to forgo the curriculum completely due to the religious content, but you might consider the opportunity presented by the material to teach your child about viewpoints that are different from yours, why you differ in your views, etc. Might help to teach him about individual rights and beliefs, and respect from one individual to another. Just my two cents'. Personally, I'm at a point where, though I was raised Christian, I'm more of an agnostic now. However, I'm also considering homeschooling my kids and I don't mind the references. I think I'll let them make up their own minds, since no one can seem to conclusively prove either evolution or Creationism, therefore taking a certain measure of faith to accept either of them.

Also, I wouldn't dream of using cloth diapers if I had the opportunity to stock up on disposables. After a month or two, or six, of shitty, smelly, runny, explosive diarrhea diapers, you might change your mind. Heck, you might not, but that's further than I'm willing to go. Cleaning a diarrhea-soaked cloth frequently?  :faint: Count on two years of that, because that's how long a lot of kids take before they start using the toilet.

Vaccinations? You don't know what's in them, you wouldn't know what to look for anyway because you aren't a scientist, there have been some bad effects to a very small percentage of the populace attributed to them, and most of all the federal government pushes their use. I understand that for freedom-minded people, those things cause a few red flags to rise. However, consider this: if you did understand enough about science to verify if a vaccination was what it is supposed to be, you would do it. Why? Because the reasoning behind using vaccinations is unquestionably brilliant. There is a reason why there are no longer epidemics of smallpox or other horrible diseases with high mortality rates - and that is because of vaccinations. I'm not saying I don't get nervous sometimes thinking about them, but I think the benefits outweigh the risks.

FYI, I don't take the flu vaccine. I've always been very healthy. I have a very strong immune system, and don't see the need for it. My wife, however, catches everything anyone around her has (and she's a nurse - go figure), so she gets it. My kids do, too.

Again, congrats on the baby! I think you'll be a great father. And hey, we don't live too far apart - maybe in the future there's a family day at the range with all of our kids.  ;)
