Damp
« on: June 22, 2014, 05:16:20 AM »
It's something that I think most people would consider a non issue but I have a leak into the cab of my car which has left me with a bit of a damp issue and that got me thinking about bunkers or even just a little hidey hole (not to mention food stores) With a number of moulds and fungus having possible negative effects on the respiratory system and general health, does anyone know of any tricks to get rid of damp in a closed up area? (Without the use of a dehumidifier)

http://www.damprid.com/moisture-odor-control-center/how-damprid-works

Many years ago my band's rehearsal room was in a house located in a rather swampy area in Georgia.  Whoever built the house didn't know what they were doing because they used a concrete foundation... it wicked moisture from the ground like a MOFO.  The previous owner gave the house to one of my band members for free because of that reason.  When mold started growing on speaker cabinets we had to do something.  Using the DampRid buckets along with leaving the overhead lights on put a stop to any new visible growth.  Condensation will collect in the bottom of the DampRid bucket(s) so it will need to be emptied periodically (maybe weekly +/- depending on the environment).  DampRid products are available at most stores & amazon.  I suggest using the hi-capacity buckets for any area larger than a closet.  We used 2 buckets in an aprrox. 12 X 12 foot room with an extreme moisture problem.

And it comes in lavender vanilla scented so your hidey hole can smell like an upmarket brothel. WOOHOO!!!

(by the way, that sounds like an awesome spot for a band room)

Very cool product, K. I live in an area where humidity and mold are a constant issue. Last year I was invaded by a mold that only affected leather products.
While i've got a good dehumidifier I'll keep these guys in the back of my mind.

SK, I use those on boats in the winter. They work great BUT you have to empty them regularly.

Thanks for the heads up. Have you stored any long term to see how they keep? If the packaging is still sealed I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem.

It comes in your basic plastic bags. If you have a small hole in the bags you end up with a mess.

For long storage I would vacuum seal the bags.
