Life as depicted in George Orwell’s 1984 “could come to pass in 2024” if lawmakers don’t protect the public against artificial intelligence, Microsoft’s president has warned.

Speaking to BBC's Panorama, Brad Smith said it will be "difficult to catch up” with the rapidly advancing technology.

The programme explores China’s increasing use of AI to monitor its citizens.

Critics fear the state's dominance in the area could threaten democracy.

“If we don’t enact the laws that will protect the public in the future, we are going to find the technology racing ahead, and it’s going to be very difficult to catch up,” Mr Smith said.

   I'm sure the industrial revolution was very disruptive.  With the invasion of robots into the job marketplace, there's going to be a large group of low income/physical labor intensive workers looking for jobs.  I can envision migrant workers going back to Mexico because they've been replaced by machines.  Robots don't need sleep or pay raises.  How many robots are concerned about a $15.00 per hour minimum wage?  If I had a school age child today, I would encourage him/her/it to study robot repair and robotics in general.
   
    There's no way to slow down the advances in AI, the government and law enforcement cadre have become too dependent upon it.  We will be observed every second of the day, unless were too remote and off grid.

The argument for being as "off-grid" and "remote" as possible is strong.
Connectivity is synonymous with complexity.   And complexity is fragile.
KISS represents the robust (albeit limiting) alternative.   
And if/when complexity meets with the Mother of All Black Swans, preppers have the better chance of enjoying their "limited" food, water, security and well-stocked library.
