Beards and gas masks
« on: August 28, 2013, 03:12:46 PM »
Hey guys

I was watching some pictures of Syrian insurgents wearing gas masks but they also have a big ass beard.

Is that useful? As far as I know you need to be clean shaved to get a proper seal

This is the pic I was looking at:

I don't see how you could possibly get a good seal with THAT MUCH facial hair.

On another note, TG could we send a Beards for Bros rep over to Syria?

With my APR even with a little bit of hair you can feel the seal wanting to give. I can't imagine that guy is even drawing air though the filter.
If you had a PAPR system or a scba you can get away with a couple weeks worth a facial hair. But I can't imagine anyone here buying that stuff for personal use.

Preceding a pretty bad fire i hadn't shaved in a month. I was able to get a decent seal with a scba.

That dude in the middle is not going to get a seal.  You can get by with Vaseline in the beard but only with a very short beard.  I've done it with 1/4" length but for industrial use, not fire fighting.

Gas masks in combat are for allowing troops to push on through the attack and then die in place after beating the enemy.

Sorry brother, our beards are 'By Americans, For Americans."

+1 for DVC, you're on it hard! Masks work to a point and that point is 'take that position and die.'

You can't eat in them, sleep in them or even live in them.

It's best to be clean shaven, when I was going thru hazmat training I couldn't get a seal on the first fit test due to my beard. We keep shaving cream and razors with all the hazmat gear. On a side note if any of you are able to become hazmat certified thru work do it!!! The training is great and its pretty cool being in the level a suit aka the space suit.  :gasMask:
