Yeah, but soft are "backers". That's kind of a literal meaning, not really open to interpretation.
Can you? Sure. But now you're just wearing extra shit because you bought the wrong shit that was heavy to begin with.
Soft armor is worn as a backer to help reduce trauma when you're hit.

I know MORE than a handful of people that have been shot in the plates house to house clearing. Those people are ALL alive, they ALL remained deployed and continued their job. I can tell you of more friends that have been saved by armor against high velocity/impact frag.

Here's the first example that ALWAYS comes to mind- Guy is shot with a x54R inside of 100yrds, bounces up, training kicks in- I mean, look at this fucking stud, gun comes up, his head is on a swivel, he takes cover, and he located and directs his buddies to the threat...oh wait, he chases the fucker down, engages, then save his life. Didn't skip a beat.
US Soldier got Sniped, gets back up (Full Story)

Yeah, AR500 is 10lbs.+, Ceramic is roughly 7lbs., then there's this magical shit called Composite. It's kind of a resin that holds together compressed layers of Kevlar. Now you're talking low 3lbs range.

Here's the bottom line- I'm a straight shooter- I'm not sugar coating this.
You're essentially "budgeting" the value of your life. I'll buy the cheaper shit to save my ass logic doesn't pass the sniff test. At all. Ever. Do or do not do. Buy something that will actually save you or buy ammo or something unrelated. Your money would be better spent. If you are entertaining the purchase of armor, you hold a value on your life. You have a sense of worth.
When determining the value, how on Earth does one even use the word "budget"? It boggles my mind!!!!

If one is struggling with the cost of AR500 plates (in relation to others), the additional cost of soft armor, even to (eww)
wear the wrong way, obviously isn't realistic.

Back to do or do not do- Buy some good stuff. Wait a month or two and save for it.
Don't buy the cheaper stuff, feel all warm and fuzzy and safe, just to have a round fragment and sever your carotid AND femoral. Now you're pluggin' two holes- how are you still holding a gun? The fights not over!!! You are screwed.

That's all I got for now.
Except to say, my war belt (Loaded/with Secondary), my Carrier (Loaded/Armor) and my head gear (with NVGs and Batteries)
is likely BARELY pushing 20-25lbs. Keep that in mind when the discussion comes back around to Stealth- Mobility- Agility-,
Doorways- Hallways- Vehicles- and EVERYTHING one must take into consideration to COMPLETELY dominate and skullfuck your adversary.

Just sayin'.
Goodnight!  :D

Tech nailed it.

Just because I don't like plates doesn't mean that you shouldn't and when it comes to PPE you do need to forget about what that stuff costs because after all it is your life.

Have you tried looking around on craigslist? We posted an add saying that we were looking to pay cash money for used hunting, shooting and military surplus and you would be amazed at the shit we were called about.. including used x-sapi plates.. and cheap too.

IF you want plates then look around because the AR500 plates are not a good value.. ever.

Thanks for that video Thatguy. I would 'still' buy it over ceramic. To me, AR500 plates are just a 'steal' for the money.

When I said roughly 3LBS in my above post, that was the weight for 10x12. and they're 3.2LBS on the money.
I actually wear a 8X10 and they're 2.6LBS each.

I had a buddy call me this morning about to buy ESAPI's (4), for $700- all 100%new.
I told him to buy Poly instead and he did. Same cost.

Are these HDPE plates available to civilians?

Wow...$350- a pop.

If I was French I would only need one plate. I would need it for the back of my plate carrier.  [url=http://www.freesmileys.or

Eh maybe more like being the slowest swimmer because you have chainmail on. might increase your chances of survival from a test bite but if he wants to eat you its useless.

Screw swimming I'm on a boat! But you need to figure out when it is time to wear plates, or when its time to go lightweight.

plates are nice in a vehicle or a guard station or some fixed position

but on a bug out/ lrsu/ then it could really pay to be light

They can be good for short range patrols.
