Looking for a new home
« on: January 29, 2012, 12:06:15 AM »
My family is starting to outgrow out 2br/2ba apartment in Tallahassee, and I'd like to move us out of town to a more rural setting. We're primarily looking for something no more than an hour from Tallahassee, but we might be able to work with something further depending on the price. It's got to be somewhere that a bonfire now and again won't be an issue. I'd like to be able to shoot on the property, but as long as it's near somewhere safe and legal to shoot that's fine. The primary concern is safety for my kids though.

I figured this would be a good place to post up and see if someone has or knows of something fitting those needs. If you've got a bit of land with an extra home on it, and maybe need help around the property I'd be happy to do any work needed in exchange for cheaper rent or whatever.

Thanks

I figure the answer is probably "no," but are you willing to leave the state and relocate? I don't have anything particular in mind, but you may want to take a look online for property caretaker jobs, or working couple jobs. There's a lot like that you're kind of mentioning, but not really in that area. Mostly west or in the Apps. If I could convince my wife to leave here we'd have done it as soon as I lost my job six months ago. Either way man, I'll keep your needs in my thoughts and prayers.

Well, I'd LOVE to move out west (my dad lives in Vegas, and that climate is perfect for me), but you're in the same boat as I am... The spouse refuses to leave the area. I *might* be able to convince her to move to near Gainesville (same 1hr max from town requirement), and we're willing to look at places in south GA, near Tallahassee, but other than that it's pretty much a no.

If you know of something certain in a paid or rent free property caretaker  type situation, I'd definitely at least try to discuss it with her, though.

The wives never make it easy do they?  ::) Well, at least I've been able to convince mine as soon as we're able we're heading towards Asheville, NC in the Pisgah National Forest. That's about 2.5 hours from here. Otherwise she's know damn well we'd already be living in Pennsylvania. Problem there is you can't really homeschool. Well, you can, but the you have to teach the state mandated education and send everything in to the state. I mean I'm sorry, but the PA department of education can suck a nut before I let them indoctrinate my kid with horse crap about evolution and take God out of his education. I'd keep talking to her about it. Remind her compromise doesn't work one way. If there's a particular line of work or salary expectations let us know. I'd gladly spend a little time online browsing for you. I know quite a few other unemployed gents on here that could offer to do the same.  [img]http://bestsmileys.com/ar

Well, I used to lay brick (patios and driveways... I can build walls but no actual job experience doing it), and enjoy doing it. I'm also an experienced landscaper. I've also got experience with carpentry and various other physical labor type tasks. I've got a pre-law associate's degree, but I also pay child support, so me working a regular job usually ends up costing me more than if I sit home unless I'm making $14+/hr

My spouse works in the "wellness" department of a whole foods type place, and she's working on a medical information technology degree that she should be done with in a couple months.

I've already decided to say screw the state, I'll home school my kids until probably 5th or 6th grade depending on location. I refuse to have my children taught WHAT to think. I'd rather teach them to think for themselves.

Good deal. I'll keep a look out for ya. I'd say I could probably find something for you around here because ironically I know a lot of contractors in the area, and there's a ton of health food grocery stores in the area popping up. Though, as I've expressed. It's the California of the east coast. I mean we're hosting the freaking DNC and I can't drive a mile without seeing an "Obama 2012" sticker.  >:(
