Chain Saw Lesson Learned Today
« on: October 09, 2012, 06:27:36 PM »
I was cutting up a bunch of previous harvested trees for firewood today and learned a valuable lesson. The lesson is...HAVE EXTRA RESHARPENED CHAINS ON HAND!

I had a chain in the shed that I had been waiting to get sharpened plus a new chain on my saw. Well I wasn't more than a half a dozen cuts in on the pile of logs when my saw leavings changed from chunks to dust and my cuts started to go sideways.

Yup you got it...My chain was dull already.

As I was standing there the farmer across the way from the cabin walked over with his inseparable plastic coffee cup in hand and said, "I heard ya' cutting and you need to keep your chain sharp ya' know. If you don't you will feel it in your shoulders the next day."  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

I explained to him that I didn't have an extra sharp chain and he just shook his head and explained to me that not having extra sharp chain could be the difference of getting the job done in the expected time frame or it taking days.

Went to town and had the two chains sharpened and bought two more.  >:(

Live and learn.

Nothing is worse than having to run to town during the middle of the day.. Not only does it set you back in time but no doubt the wife will want a burger and to come too!

Do you have a camera or something here?  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

With the wife though it isn't a burger its a soft serve ice cream cone (Bad diabetic that she is) and a swing buy the 'smoke shop' so she can buy another carton of smokes at half of what they sell for in RI.  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

True story. I keep an axe in my work truck for when the chainsaw takes a shit or im feelin tough lol.. Also  using a rat tail file to match the saw blades teeth is a good way to keep it sharp for a lot longer before having it resharpened. After every few cuts just run the file over every tooth a couple passes.
Simplicity Is Ideal...

Great idea Ken!

Well I went into town and had a guy resharpen the two chains for $6- each. He had this fancy machine that did it. Got home and used one of my new chains and my saw cut through those logs like 'budda.'

At 4:30 or so I grabbed a couple pf 5 gallon jugs to refill before it got dark so I would have water later on to do the dishes. Well no water!

Walked the water line to the spring and the sieve / one way valve I am using to filter the water had a ball of alga around it the size of a soft ball. Had to clean that...re-prime the line and had water again. The whole time the frog who lives in the well stared at me and let out a croak every minute or so. Little bastard!

Was just sitting down to dinner and their was a tap at the door.

I opened the door and their was a young lad and his girl friend holding a beagle puppy standing there.

The girl friend said, "We were running our beagles and my boy friend truck is in the ditch down the dirt road...Can you help us?"

I asked if they wanted to use the phone to call AAA or did they want me to get the truck. In unison they said, "The truck!"

I told them that I would meet them down the road in a minute and changed back into my work digs and drove down. Yup...His truck was in a big ass ditch at a nice 45 degree angle.

After a brief discussion I told the young lad to hook the chain to his front axial and I was going to pull him out with the F-150. He insisted on me pulling him out from his stern; however I said, "Based on the angle that you drove into the ditch I am going to pull you out with bow first."

His girl friend told him to shut up and listen to me.  :))

Well to make a long story short it worked without a hitch. As the young lad was uncoupling the chain from his front axial his girl friend came over and gave me a big hug and a peck on the cheek.

The guy wanted to pay me however I told him it was his obligation to help someone else in similar circumstances down the road.

Nothing better than cold two day left over piece of chicken pot pie, a glass of mediocre Chardonnay and a hug and peck on the cheek from a young gal.

I guess I made out O-Kay today... Advise from someone who knows and the ability to help someone too.

Thank you Lord, it was a good day.
