Whats Your Longest Shot on Target
« on: August 21, 2016, 01:16:24 AM »
at a 3 foot diameter target?

I bet it ain't over 1500 yards.

The guy in the link below did it at 4210 yards.  That Four Thousand Two Hundred Ten yards which works out to 2.4 miles.

Amazing.

You be fully amazed.  Go read the rest of the article linked below.

The 4210 Yard Shot (2.4 Miles)

There’s a small group of Texans who are on a never ending mission chasing the world record for longest shot. Their obsession paid off again when Jim Spinella tagged a 3′ plate nearly 2.4 miles from his position using a high performance HCR 375 CheyTac rifle.  Not too long ago the team over at Hill Country Rifles could hit an objective that was 3800 yards out.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

300 yards here. This is about as long as I can see with all the woods around.

Deer rifle sighted in for 200 yards even though every deer I have harvested has been under 75 yards.

Trade that modern bolt action 308 for a more terrain/creature/animal/use fitting rifle.  Get an old Winchester 30-30.

That is most likely what I will be using in the hills and hollers here in W. Central Va for deer this year.  Except it will be a 357 cal Winchester 73.

My deer rifle is a 1937 manufactured, Model 99 Savage in .300 Sav. with a Leopold 1x4 power scope. Never needed more than one shot to put a deer down.

My other deer rifles are:

Marlin model 336 lever action in .35 Rem with a Weaver 4x scope,
Custom made Lancaster circa 1776 flint lock in .54 caliber,
Investa Arms Hawken style cap lock in .50 caliber, and
Thompson Arms Hawken style kit rifle I made using a flint lock in .50 caliber.

Like the 5 or so different hammers I own - They all have a specific purpose.

I have a 99, but its in the real old 303 Savage cal.  Serial number traces it back to 1903.  Dad got it in 1971 and it had the right side plate of the stock broken off.  He got it (because of that) for $6. Stock was replaced and I still have about 85 rounds of factory ammo for it.

Love that old thing.  Ain't worth more than a couple hundred dollars but I would not take several large for it.

Assuming life permits this year I will try my CVA Bobcat 50 cal BP rifle.  Got that for $60 at a yard sale.  Reportedly never fired.

Those are the only 2 I have left.  Had to sell the rest to pay medical bills and you know how they build up.

Mine is the 300 range.

Anyone else?  We will not think bad of you if you are under 150.

My longest hit on 10x18 steel with a 5.56 is 860 yds.  With my .308 my longest is just a hair over 1000yds (1040yds).  I was able to put hits on the same 1040yd steel with the .300Win and  6.5 Creedmore.

The longest I get to shoot with any regularity is out to the mid 600yd range.  I shoot this with both my 5.56mm and my .308.  We shoot TacStrike 10x18 as our targets.

@ Nemo: I use to have a Model 99 in .303 Sav. 1917 manufacture. As you mentioned, ammo is a bitch to find however, you can roll your own.

I bought a .303 Sav. die. Took 30/30 brass and re sized them in the .303 die. You will need to trim the resized case a hair. I forget how much though. You will have to look that up.

WARNING WILL ROBINSON...If you do roll your own use less powder than what is recommended for a factory load. I use to load it with IMR-3031 powder which I can not find anywhere anymore. It's all mute as I sold the rifle in my late teens to help pay for the next semester at college.

On another note: There are few model 99's that do not have a crack in the stock just past the receiver at the grip. Also switching out the stock is great, so the rifle becomes a shooter HOWEVER do not throw out the original stock as then the rifle is worthle$$. The stock and fore grip must have the same serial number as the receiver's to be worth anything.

That was a fun rifle.

That 99 stock was replaced a month or 3 after dad got it way back whenever.  It (of course) was trashed back then.  Nowadays I even keep the boxes for any firearm purchased.  If I can ever get $$ together to get one again.

But all I have were sold (except that 303) and the ones that I still had the original box brought a few bucks more than the ones without.

Wish I could have kept some of the ones I used to have.

My longest shot was 600 yards even though that was on an index card sized target.

my social work rifles are zeroed for 50/200 and in my AO I expect 90% of shootouts to be under 100m..

I believe it was 885. Hard to say because he was running so fast.

If anyone is in the Northeast, Weaponcraft is holding a mid-range precision class up in Maine at the end of Sept. Mid-Range is 200-500yds. The class will be held in Moose River, Maine.  Class code is PR01
