NE Pennsylvania Compared to SE Pennsylvania - Observations
« on: December 27, 2021, 12:19:00 PM »
MrsMac and I was down to the SE portion of the state to spend Christmas with my mom. These are several observations that we chatted about on the way home.

SE Pennsylvania

> Depending on the store we went to, 100% to 80% of the staff and customers were masked.
> My mom lives in a very nice neighborhood. All the properties look nice and folks are sweet. While walking dogs, 90% of
the neighbors were wearing masks.  Yes, that is outside.
> Covid-19 dominated all of the local news television time. Add to the Covid on the news, murders, shooting's, beating's
took second violin after the Covid news.
> Covid tests are taking 7-days to get one once you call your doctor. There are drive up Covid kiosks but the wait time is
      hours.
> I grew up around where my mom currently lives. Folks talked fast, drove fast, were not helpful with
neighbors, etcetera. Basically, fast talking self centered folks. Well this trip, during Holiday time, multiply that culture
by 4x's but with with masks.
> Prices in the grocery stores were crazy. Easily, 10% across the board more expensive than up home here.
> There were empty shelves for sure but on odd things. As an example of some basic Philly food where shelves were bare;
no (Taylor) pork roll, no pretzels, limited lunch meat, limited selection of eggs, milk seemed to be limited and
expensive ($1.79 for a qt. while up here, $1.20 a gt.). When questioned about some of these shortages the usual
      excuse was, "lack of workers".
> EVERYBODY had hiring signs out. With the exception of Talbots (ladies Clothing), waiting in lines was now the norm.
> Petrol was 4 to 20 cents above the cheapest place here in the NE.

NE Pennsylvania

> Less than 10% of the folks in stores wear a mask. On occasion you will see someone walking from their vehicle to a store
with a mask on. I suspect it is just laziness not fear of Covid on the outside.
> Petrol is coming down in the 5 to 10 cent range from Thanksgiving.
> Prices on food and other grocery store supplies are higher than LY but not crazy.
> People are friendly and helpful.
> Local news is mostly about weather and what folks are doing this year to help less fortunate members of the
community. I can't remember a broadcast about a murder or shooting in quite awhile. Oh, DWI reports on the local
news is a bit up though.
> If I want a Covid test, I can get one with a phone call to my doctor. The results are back within a 24-hour period.

Two different area's of the same state, Pennsylvania.

Johny, I think many of those differences would be observable in urban areas versus rural areas of most States.  The urban environment breeds crazy.

"True Confessions of a Former Flatlander"  :lmfao: :lmfao: :lmfao: Just kidding, we're very fortunate that you moved here and "converted".

Just had the dubious pleasure of talking with someone that I went to school with, they grew up here in the sticks with us, but moved to LA. It was like talking to an alien. I deal with people from all over the world and I have more in common with most of them than this person that grew up in the same environment as I did. This person was irate that no one here wears masks, believes "the authorities" will get us through all this, and tried telling me how great southern CA is.  :what: They were horrified that I won't get the experimental injection, and actually tried to explain how the shot is far superior to acquired immunity. Sounded like I was watching CNN, or what I imagine watching CNN is like.

Living 5 minutes away from groceries, the mall, etc. is great until you realize that if something goes wrong, you're only 5 minutes away from a lot of panicked, ignorant people who will expect someone else to help them.

I don't know who it was, but they described Pennsylvania perfectly as "Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, with Alabama in between".

I remember that being said on network broadcast about one of the Presidential races, years back. Has always stuck with me. Made me have some hope for some Yankees - LOL

Don't judge a state solely by its citiots. Most of the "Blue States" are actually "Red States" overwhelmed by the festering cities.

Look at the census and reapportionment of the Federal voting districts.

Check CA, IL, NY and some others.

WV just lost general population due to a dozen other factors too.

And the ones picking up a House of Reps seat. or 2.  Mostly red states.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

Really excellent observations.  I know I dont need to get into what its like living here in SE New England. To say the least it feels like everyone is more worried about your business than their own.  That said I am lucky enough to live in a town that has traditionally been agri-based and on a decent piece of land (for the area).

I was just in Northern NH to shoot a little bit of longer range. It has been a not so funny joke how Southern NH is becoming Northern MA. The scary thing is how fast it is moving northward.  Makes you wonder about how much longer the "Live Free or Die" State will be so.

Yes Chris. NH has the ability to turn purple due mainly to the migration invasion of MA folks moving north.

The same thing happened in Leigh (Allentown) and Pocono (Stroudsburg/Scranton area) Counties here in Pennsylvania. "They" come in from NY and NY via the three major highways, I-78 (Allentown), I-80 (Stroudsburg) and I-84 (Scranton. These carpet baggers drive up the price of housing and bring their moderate-left politics with them.

With the dishonesty of the elections in Philadelphia and Pittsburg, along with the invasion from the east, Pennsylvania is solidly in the Purple state category now.

By the way Chris, Happy New Year!
