What's your favorite Firesteel?

I am looking for a new Firesteel and wanted to know you guy's opinions on the best ones. I've had several cheap ones but they don't cut it anymore. I want a steel that showers sparks haha any suggestions?

I ordered a couple of these a few years ago.  You can find them at amazon for slightly less with free shipping for a $35+ order... Be warned that more and more amazon dealers will advertise one product, but will switch to shipping an inferior (similar looking) model when their stock is back-ordered... hence the occasional bad review.  Also, beware of the 3-pack economy deal offered at the sportsmansguide... they're inferior shite.

I have never used a fire steel. I have though used a piece of flint and steel with good success if I used a piece of char to get the ember started.

I have some Chinese ones.
If you peel slowly the flint, small pieces will fall into the target area, and then when you hit the firesteel the sparks will ignite those little pieces helping you to ignite the fire more easily...
Anyway, a Bic lighter works faster, firesteel is just as last resort or when playing bushcraft.

I've had a couple of the Swedish steels and they are really nice but it's hard to find a source that is actually legit. That being said I've found that SOL makes a nice little steel.

I've heard that their strikers are east to bend and flimsy, have you had that problem?

SC, I have not had any issue with that but I am typically not abusive to my gear, if you are you might be able to break the striker.

I never use the strikers. If the back of your knife has a flat 90º edge on the spine it will strike the rod very well. If its just kind of 90º with the factory smooth edge take a file to it so its nice and sharp. It shaves off a lot more material in a single strike then the chinsy striker with little pronges.

Special K the one in the link looks identical to the coghns ones they sell at Big 5. Just a different name. They work fine for me though. First thing to break is the grip that's glued on. I rip it off right away anyways so it fits in an altoid tin.
