WANTED: Suggestions on new knife!
« on: September 30, 2013, 02:58:49 AM »
So anyone that knows me, I REALLY love sharp shiny objects lol.  Now I have plenty of knives, enough to make the joker proud.  Here is the thing though.  I am looking for something thin and sturdy that I could use as kind of a concealable back up knife for my back up knife lol.  I have looked at the
Benchmade SOCP

But reading some reviews have brought up issues with the draw and the $80 price tag while I'm sure is worth it makes me wonder if there aren't other options.

I found Cold Steel's Spike series (I know, not a dagger), specifically the Tokyo, which does have a slightly longer blade, and a couple other features that I like.  Not to mention it is a third less than the SOCP.

But I am here to hear what you all have to say on the matter.  Anyone have any suggestions for a good concealable dagger?

For me it's a tough to come up with a knife number. The reason being I use knives for a multitude of chores. To me a knife is a tool not an obsession. Now for MrsMac it is an obsession!

Her everyday carry is a Kershaw Scallion. Open up the kitchen "knife drawer" and you will see dozens and dozens of knives that she has purchased over the years. I am the one who gets to sharpen them

I hear you JM, and honestly some of my knives I plan on handing out to trusted folk that may need em when the time comes.  And this is something I am looking for that can be easily concealed in case I need to go REALLY grey, or even carried as a back up weapon while I am on duty.  I did find a sight that sells them slightly cheaper but they cant advertise the price openly or benchmade would jump on them.  From what I have seen so far it looks like the best option for what I am looking for in the sub $100 range.  But I thought I would throw the question out there to see if anyone else knew of a good one.

I think the number of knives isn't important, it's what you use them for and making sure you have what you need for what you're doing.  For instance, I have a regular kitchen cleaver for prepping food, and then I have a nice, heavy duty cleaver with my butchering kit for when we raise the broilers.  The first one will likely go through smaller bones, but the latter I know will go through bone.  I don't know much about non-cooking knives, so I can't really speak to the kind at which you're looking, but I hope you find one you like.

I just have a folding knife, and a Ka-Bar. Although I would like to have a bushcraft friendly knife.
I don't like daggers much,  they look nice but aren't comfortable for working, I rather multipurpose tools.

Rather than hand out knives why not buy cheap rifles or handguns? Pre sandy hook my local gun store hade sub$100 handguns. Granted they weren't something I would put my life on, but if they need a hand out oh fucking well.

Since you asked for dagger/dirk  type/style...

I'd be inclined to add a bit of a guard to the first but the price is right on these 2

Just be careful of any laws on this type of blade.
BTY the klein is an awesome tool that needs a bit of fine sharpening on the edge but the utility cutting this thing does is amazing, I'm gonna have to dig thru the barn and find mine now.

Added thought, You may have some issues. With that out of the way, horizontal belt carry?

I had a guy contact me saying he wanted to thank me for running the forum as long as I had, he said he 'had a gift he wanted to send,' I said 'that's awesome but no worries, I got my moneys worth.' Yet he insisted.

I am now in possession of a HUGE Ol'Hickory knife. It slides though watermelons from end to end with no problem, scares the shit out of my liberal co-workers when it makes it's appearance at the potlucks and delights the shit out of me every time I set a stone to it.

That dude was Colombo, he knows his blades for sure.

That said if you plan on having hand outs why not old break open shotguns? You can find them for $50-$100 at most good gun shops and they have a better range then blades.

Or a fucking Gladius!

Damn you Colombo!!

WOW! Awesome knife. It kind of looks like something on of my Scottish ancestors would have used.

LOL First of all, thank you for the responses.  Most were truly... well expected from the likes of this crew  :lmfao:

At this point in the game we have enough firearms to hand out to several of the trusted people who would show up and we are getting more.  That said, we are also focused on making sure that everyone who might show up empty or light handed (either because of extenuating circumstances or what have you ) will have the bare basics to survive in everyday survival post SHTF.  Making sure all parties have the basic essentials will ensure that resources are not fought over or stretched thin.

But this thread wasn't supposed to be about supplying a group and honestly the poll was added last second and as a joke.  FOCUS!

ON TOPIC: I was looking for a knife that is unobtrusive that I could easily conceal on me while I am on duty or in the event that SHTF.  I have a Ka-bar TDI but honestly the thing, between the sheath and handle are still a bit bulky to wear on my duty belt as they suggest.  I was thinking the SOCP wearing it in my pocket off hand where I could yank it out by the ring if I needed it, then I got side tracked by thinking about a SHTF situation use lol.

Again, thanks for the suggestions and I will figure something out.

Dagger is illegal to conceal in my state and they are pretty worthless as a knife in general.  What is the intended purpose?

You mentioned duty belt so is it to fight off a gun grab?  I kept the Benchmade push dagger behind my radio on the weakside while on duty.  it was out of sight but easy to access.

For SHTF, I'd look at something more practical unless this it the second knife and last ditched weapon?

What's the mode of carry?

Thanks for the response.  I forgot about my cold steel push dagger that I got a long time ago.  Thanks for the suggestion.  Yes, for SHTF it is meant to be a last ditch OH F*CK type weapon lol.

I've always thought that push daggers looked cool... I've never owned one though.
[/end random thought]

Since you're looking for a back up - back up, I've always considered a full size, high quality butterfly to be the only folding knife that rivals the strength of a comparable sized fixed blade, but there may be legal issues in your state.  Plus there's the muscle memory training of opening it swiftly.  Probably not your cup of tea.  Just my 2?.

EDIT:  I own one Bali-song butterfly that I paid more $100 for back in the late '80's.  I consider it to be my most durable folding knife by far.  That's the reason I brought it up.  Be warned, there are a lot of toy butterflies for sale... it's actually kind of hard to find a quality one nowadays.

For a backup backup I can make 3 suggestions off the top of my head.

1 a push dagger like the cold steel safe maker
2 crkt stiff kiss
3 smith and wesson sw990
