Tapco AK Polymer Stocks(telescoping/Folding) Removal/Install
« on: November 14, 2011, 07:19:10 PM »
Okay. Heres my attempt at showing you guys how to remove Tapco stocks from AK-47s and Install them. Now these are best compatible with stamped receivers. Underfolders are not compatible, these include milled receivers, a bottom tang, a slant-cut receiver at the rear, and mak-90s.

First you will need the proper parts and tools.
1. The Stock(s)
2. Appropriate Hardware. 1 1/2 Inch Wood/Drywall screws. 3X
3. Your Choice of Electric Drill.
4. The Damn AK itself.
5. Common Sense
Now I already switched the stocks prior to taking the pics. Its can be done exactly in reverse with Tapco stocks.

Okay, now look at the back of your AK between the stock and the receiver. You'll notice a screw to the back.

Hit the spring button and open up your AKs dust-cover. Slide the spring forward and pull it out.

Now you should be looking at a half way gutted AK. Half stripped is what I call it. Now you should go back and look at that screw towards the back. You'll now see that another screw was hiding about an inch above the first screw, underneath where the receiver spring button was. Both of these are what you want to unscrew.

Now you don't need to be the brightest light bulb to do this part. Just un-screw.

After you get done un-screwing that hardware... stop. Look at this pic showing the two stock styles side by side. Telescoping stock installed, folding not. Like I said, I already finished before I took pics. At the front of the folding stock, you can see how I have a flat base lined up with the rear of the AK, this slides into the AK rear. In and out. Both stocks are the same. Once you have the chosen the stock slid it in. Find the screw holes and check if they are lined up good before screwing. Then, screw it in. You may have some space in between receiver and stock, you may not. Its an easy fix though, just grind where its needed if this problem occurs.

In order to attach a sling of your choosing, you need to screw in one more screw. The sides of the stock attached to the buffer tube have rectangular shapes cut out of both sides. This is so that you can screw in the cut pieces. One side having a long loop for traditional slings and a circle for single point slings .

Once you are finishing up, this is what it should look like.

I decided to swap out the side folding stock for the telescoping, simply because of Length of Pull. The side folders are really long and didn't fit my build. I felt like I was reaching out really far to fire. This tired me out! With a length of pull at 15 inches, no way, not for me. I decided on the 8.5 inch Tapco telescoping stock. I love the feel of my AK being close. Its a perfect fit for me. Oh yeah, both are U.S. 922r compliant. Here are some length comparison pics.

It was easy, looks good, and it was affordable. Thanks Veritas!

Excellent post. I do want to stress need part about making the stock flush with the receiver. This is because of a recent issue I had with a tapco T6 collapsible stock for my AK. After several months of shooting and plain abuse to the stock, the stock had a fatal failure. Lee stock became loose to the point where the screws were stripped in the stock would not stay in place. I later discovered that this was due to a small gap between the stock and the receiver. To Tapco's credit, I e-mailed them and received a response promptly. They sent me a brand-new tube the screws for it and the drillbit to install it. It is important when installing the new stock use the drillbit to start the holes per the directions so that you do not end up with canted or lopsided screws.  Also you do not have to use the sling attachment as there is a slot for a sling on the stock, tho I find the forward attach point more comfortable for my style.

Good post!  I was actually looking one of these over from Cheaper Than Dirt for my AK.  It would certainly have some advantages.  I just can't seem to walk away from my wood stock though.  The durn thing makes such a great club to beat things with.

BTW, I originally had the folding stock on my AK.  While I did like it, and it has a role on an AK, I did not like the length of it as well as how bulky it is when folded compared to others.  Also it is a little loose when its unfolded.

To be totally honest, Ive always wanted an old wood stock. My AK came with the side folder. Not that the side folder doesn't have its uses, its just not for me. And thanks guys for the positive feedback. It took forever trying to figure out the order to put these pics in, yet alone describe what Im doing. Had a tad bit of help from the wife.

As for the space in between the stock and receiver, its good that you brought that up NoWhere, Because you can totally do some damage to the stock if you keep drilling wrong along with the recoil abuse. So thanks for the extra info.

I really liked that TAPCO stock.  Big improvement over the wood that came with my 10/63.  If I ever find the butt pad for it, I'll send it to you PatriotSeeker.

A friend of mine turned me onto this stock....

They aren't kidding about a tight receiver fit.  I got it in about halfway and had to wrap the end on a towel and bang it against my basement floor about 20 times to properly seat it.  I doubt that I can remove it without damaging my rifle.   Awesome setup for a southpaw.   [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

Was going to ask you. Now that you changed out your stock. Do you want to get rid of your folding one?
