It is CYCLES that wear a spring not compression. I have had a 3,000lbs welder on a truck that is rated for 2,000lbs for over 5 years. Are the springs bad? Did they shoot out of the truck? Are they in pieces on the dirt? No, no and no.
If you over compress a spring it will break, if you wear it out it will quit rebounding. You have a spring that is showing its wear.
Do an experiment, put the old spring in the gun with the new follower and see if it still works. You are dealing with two replacement parts on that firearm and one of them could have made all the difference.
