Small Side or Sling Bag
« on: June 01, 2024, 02:11:17 PM »
Okay, looking for some advise from this group.

Scenario

For the last two months or so, I have been keeping an AR-15 in my vehicle along with a small bag with three 5.56 mags in it. Before I cross the border and go into Indian Country (NY State), I grab the bag of mags and AR-15 and put them into my house. I think that the penalty is worse for the 30 round mags than the long gun.  :lmfao: Anyway, the bag would serve two purposes,
1) Carry mags, and
2) Drop used mags into.

The perfect bag would be...Easy to grab and deploy on my body. Maybe carry on my back till needed than pulled to the front for easy access to pocket or pockets.

Need help on

The small bag of mags is clumsy and it looks to tacticool. I would much rather have something that says "gray man" than GUNS. I was looking at maybe a sling bag like this one, https://www.511tactical.com/molle-packable-sling-pack.html or this one https://www.511tactical.com/lv8-sling-pack.html?sku=888579605686&country=us&zmp&msclkid=47d4a71571dd1896ce0bc14e4ea05690&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=B_Shopping_All%20Products%20(Medium)&utm_term=4580702893212413&utm_content=Catchall or this one https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/126391?page=llbean-deluxe-sling-pack&bc=&feat=sling%20bag-SR0&csp=a&attrValue_0=4929&searchTerm=sling%20bag&pos=2

With that written, $90- seems a bit pricey for what I am looking for.

Thoughts?

I use this as a deep cover carry pack.  It works well and hold near any sidearm I want to carry and a spare mag in the back pouch..  I also keep my phone and car keys in the front at the gym.

I suspect it could easily do 2 rifle mags in the back half and phone, pistol mag or 2 and such in the front.

I use mine primarily on a belt, so I have something at hand when in the gym doing some exercising.

I am quite pleased with it.  No issues but the elastic inside the pouch parts does wear out some.  I have been using it for near 3 years and it still snugs some.

Both pouches are zippered.  Back pouch is front to back (R to L) opening on the zip pull and front pouch is back to front opening (L to R) in video on zipping.

There is a front slot.  I do not keep anything there.

For just mags and a bit of kit the waist pouch you show would be my preference.  But I do already have a single sling bag type GHB in the vehicle.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

I've got a Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack that I occasionally carry.  There's all kinds of pouches that are available for the bag.  I've taken it to a number of hamfests, when I want to carry discreetly, plus I can have a radio mounted on the carry strap.

Veto anything that is logo'ed with a company that is LE or military related if you really want to go "grey man"   LE will recognize such and act accordingly.  You don't want the notice.  Better to go with a small book bag from a quality company, preferably "left leaning" (LOL). You may want to look at Sierra Trading Post or possibly REI for other options.
Quickly glancing at Sierra, here's a possibilty: https://www.sierra.com/slumberjack-nomad-27-l-backpack-blue~p~3pntx/?filterString=backpacks~d~9669%2F

Johny

I would go with a small sling back from someone like Patagonia.  This is the one I use for similar purposes.
https://www.backcountry.com/patagonia-atom-8l-sling-bag
In it I carry 3 rifle mags, 2 pistol mags, and a blowout (med) kit. It lives with the rifle.

Even when carrying around it doesnt look at all like a "tactical" bag. It is also very well built and has held up very well.

Not to be a "crank" or anything... but _why_ doesn't "ankle carry" get much sugar here?
Mano-o-mano, sexy, non-visible waist is _still_ in the reachable conflict zone.   Unless luxuriating in the physical separation that allows multiple choices.   Maybe.   Depending.
Retention issues?
Many tussles can go to the ground.   Sometimes rather quickly, even IF lack of situational awareness hasn't left you blindsided.
.... grappling enthusiasts notwithstanding.
Dropping down to access ankles reduces target, perhaps momentarily confuses adversary.
What is it that I am missing???

What is it that I am missing???

Well, in my case, I'm not as flexible as I once was, and not as well balanced.  There's a time issue too.  It takes longer to bend over, raise a pant leg, and retrieve the firearm.  The "pistolero experts" have frowned upon ankle carry for many years due to the long time to draw.  Back in the 70's, cops would ankle carry for back-up guns, but times have changed.  Heck, most of the "experts" don't like drop leg holsters either due to the draw times.  Ankle carry is probably the most impractical method of carry.  And if you can ankle carry a particular firearm, then you probably can pocket carry it too.  I've been known to carry a NAA .22LR revolver in a neck holster.

Getting back to the sling pack, the Maxpedition versapack has a holster built into it, which is handy, but like an ankle holster, you're not going to set any draw records.

I have an ankle holster for a 25 ACP but I never use it. If I'm going somewhere that I know is dangerous, I'll ankle carry as a backup.

Think of the market possibilities: concealed carry AND Baofeng combined in one device!

A .22 magnum handi-talkie for preppers. A smaller version of THIS classic.

If I'm going somewhere I know is dangerous, I will find another place to go.  If the fan is dirty I will take a small fire team with me.
