SHTF Shaving
« on: May 05, 2015, 04:52:39 PM »
Hi All,

Well I am going to be doing a review soon on something old in design.

I have thought about growing a beard yet if a gas mask is needed, then there is a problem.

Personal Hygiene is important when things go south.

So I have been on the hunt for a shaving solution that will stand the test of time.

Razors that require disposal elements in this case is in reality a no/go.

So what do we do?

I have a few really good cut throat or straight razors, yet am not really to good with them.

So I did a bit of research.

I have ordered a razor called a Rolls Razor and am going to test it out.

Look it up. It is a neat piece of engineering.

More to come soon.

I learned to shave with a streight razor and I was taught that you have to get over your fear of cutting yourself. If your razor is very sharp and you hold it correctly you will not have a problem. The only time I cut myself was when my sister poked me in the ribs while I was shaving. Let us know if the Rolls is any good, it looks like a large saftey razor. Not to highjack your post but double edge razor blades can be sharpeded buy pressing them inside a glass and moving them back and forth.
In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.

If you have a BOL  and bic razors and shaving cream being so cheap at many places couldnt one buy a lifetime supply of both for maybe 200 bucks? :)

I have done (when I was shaving daily) the blue Good News for probably 30 years.  Generally Edge cream.  I have tried about all other methods and types always going back to those for on a cost basis after a fair trial.  Edge generally worked best and was most cost efficient also.  But a good slathering of Dial soap worked just about as well too.

No modern razor has touched my face since about for about the last 5 years unless necessary as explained following.  Just electric clippers ever 4-5 days.  But there were times last fall I tried 2 straight razor a half dozen times each until they got just a bit not sharp enough to continue.  Have tried to touch up but just don't quite get them there.  Thats where the last good news uses come into play.  Of course, funerals and wedding and such also get me to get out the razor too.

Using those were a bit difficult the first 3-4 times but after that much easier and less headache than any other way I have tried.  Get one, use it, learn it, keep it sharp and stropped and you will quickly like it better than anything else.

I've been wondering about this as well...no wait, I haven't :)

I stopped shaving during 5-day canoe trip down the Murray River in 2000, can't see the point.

You need to get a rechargeable hair trimmer, plug that to a 12v power source and your shaving needs are solved.
Probably you'll need to modify the charger just a bit to receive 12v directly instead of using the 220/110 power supply.

Or, plug that shaver into a inverter that runs off of your batteries that collect energy from the Sun.

I no longer have a beard. I am now sporting a hansom Goatee and use APX808's type of razor to keep me trim.  ;)

All good suggestions here.

As I said I am cool with my opinion that a clean shave is a good thing. Gas Masks don't do well with a beard. Not knocking it though. I still play with the idea of having a beard. Yet since there are WAY to many places around us that if they caught fire would release stuff I don't want to breath. Then I guess I am going to stick with the shaving thing.

The other thing is that I wanted to have something that I can keep in my Rucksack as part of my everyday hygiene kit that does not require consumables or power.

Like I said before the cut throat razor is great. Yet I am not that great with it. So I thought I could give the Rolls Razor a shot. Plus it is a cool bit of engineering.

Plus one in mint condition at about $25 delivered to my door, what can I loose?

Correct about gas masks, I remember working with firies years ago and they are all clean shaven because wearing BA (Breathing Apparatus) is part of the job.

Maybe there's a "whole head" BA I could use, I don't really see it being needed in my area but OTOH if there's a fire it's often the smoke that gets you and it's impossible to function in heavy smoke, you just have to run and hope you find clear air in say 20 seconds.

I just dry shave. If I miss a few days, regular soap.

how about the WWII Soviet NVA type?  They cover the whole head.

I also found this somewhat amusing  :sarcasm:

OK... All

Here is the brief review.

My 14 yr old son was the first to try out his Rolls Razor.

He likes it and is comfortable with using it.

I tried mine out and really like it.

14 and needed a razor like that?  He must be one stud.  Better get him on a short leash before you have a dozen unexpected grandkids running around.

Hi Jm,

I got mine on ebay. There are loads of them on the UK market. Should be some in the US.

If not many sellers over here will ship to the US now.

HI All,

OH Man I just checked on the US Ebay site for these......

They are cheaper by half than they are here in the UK where they were made.

Go figure........

I highly recommend picking one up along with an extra blade at the prices I see on the US Ebay.

both my son and I have used ours over the last week every day and we have found them to be pretty darn good.

They work as well as the later safety razor, yet require no consumables.

Cheers all

Zero plans on shaving after the fall.

I'll keep it trimmed but to put a razor to my face when I don't have to.  :lmfao:

lol I'm good.

I'm with Reaver!  :fuckYeah:
I haven't had a clean shave since 1992...  even in Iraq <as a civilian> I passed the mandatory PATS test (gas mask test) by trimming my beard a bit and using sun block.

Zero plans on shaving after the fall.

I'll keep it trimmed but to put a razor to my face when I don't have to.  :lmfao:

lol I'm good.
