Missing items
« on: September 15, 2014, 04:10:18 PM »
I'm pretty new to this board and haven't read everything on it but I think there is two necessary items not mentioned.
One is a Barometer/hygrometer/thermometer. Whether bugging out and especially bugging in you need to know the weather.
Two is a recipe book. What good is having all that food if you can't make it tasty. After awhile you'll get tired of boiled beans and rice.
In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.

Two very good ideas!  As to the cookbook, for me that's where the "prep what you use and use what you prep" mentality comes in for me.  But, it'd be interesting to see what recipes people have.

One that we eat a lot in the WPW household is bean stew.  A little chicken stock, some beans (soaked overnight - I'm fairly partial to 13 bean mix, myself), and some sort of meat (my preference is smoked sausage, fried up and then added to the slow cooker).  You can easily make this in a dutch oven if power's out and you can't use the slow cooker.

JoJo, go to the top of the home screen and type in Recipe and see what pops up. Here are some:

You get the idea.

Concerning your "Barometer/hygrometer/thermometer" suggestion is right on!  At the cabin we have a Davis Instrument Vantage Pro 2 . Yes a bit pricy however a great tool. At home, I use a good old fashion Barometer and thermometer to predict weather.

Oh and there is always the Weather Stick. We have one of those at the cabin too. Great Christmas or "home warming" present for a new home owner.

The weather stick is great... but it still can't beat the weather rock.

knowing the weather can be very important.  In my younger days I spent a lot of time outside alternatively, construction, farming and in the field for the US Army.  IMHO, studying clouds worked out better for 6-12 hour prognosticating.  I admit it is latitude and time of year dependent but it worked.  the only places I have lived where this didn't work were in the Rockies and on the water - things can sneak-up on you very quickly in those locations.

there should be something funny about weather sticks and stones and clouds...  I just can't articulate it very well.

After eleven wrecks, I rely on my left knee, right ankle and left shoulder. Pretty much dead on for oncoming low pressure systems.

Anybody need a ride ?

Just picked up a digital watch that reads temperature through a UV sensor figured I'd give that a try. Also brilliant Idea about the cookbooks! I'll be uploading some onto my Nook which has made it as a permanent BOB item.
