Good everyday hiking-type shoe needed...
« on: November 04, 2012, 11:13:58 PM »
What are folks view of shoes by Keen and Merrell? Looking for a everyday hiking-type shoe for work, etc. Used to have a pair of Ozark Trails and worn the hell out of them until the leather stitching came out. I'm pretty hard on my shoes and don't generally have more than one or two pair of decent shoes at any given time. Looking for good brands that will take a beating and hold-up well. Been looking at the Keen Targhee shoe lately.

Both are great everyday wear/hiking shoes.  They won't hold up for longer than a year or two if you're hard on them, but they aren't super expensive and they are comfortable.  It comes down to which fit best and feel good walking around the store.  I prefer Merrells, I am on my 3rd pair in 6 years wearing them almost everyday to work and school, my job requires hiking so I generally choose the Merrells over my redwing work boots when it's hot and the rattle snake population's low.  TG likes his Keens but they are really lightweight (sounds strange that that's a problem, but it can be) and they take some getting used to cause the soles are a little different.  I always buy my gear that I'm unsure about from REI.  You might be able to find a cheaper price, but REI will take back any gear, any time, even shoes you've walked around in for a month.

thatGirl, the wicked 'hike all week with this bag and take it back no questions' return policy is for co-op members.. but you shoulc be a member anyhow.

Crudos, like Mrs.TG says the Keens are very light. This causes issues with getting poked in the the foot by rocks. I've carried heavier loads than I should be with those Keen shoes on and it is good so long as we are on smooth ground but I do get foot sore rock hopping.

Update:
So shortly after I started this thread, I got a used pair of Keen Voyageurs to beat on, and they were beat; trashed, hiked through snow, ice, rain and otherwise abused. Well I recently retired that pair to yard work duty, and bought a brand new pair of Keen Koven Mids. Love them so far, and build quality seems top-notch as expected from this brand.

Cool. I am a fan of Filson footwear. I have a pair of boots from them that are 11-12 years old. Twice I sent them back to be worked on (Sole and inside heel support became loose). Both times they fixed them for free - No questions.

For $400+ a pair they best have a highly skilled cute chick foot massager stop by once a week.

Ahhh Nemo, in footwear you get what you pay for.

To an infantryman, the most important article of clothing is footwear.

Again, they are ~12 years old and I have sent them back twice to be fixed at no cost to me other than shipping one way. The only thing they have ever asked of me is to send them back clean with no blood on them.  :what:

I have always been a fan of "buy it once" and if I have to pay for that then OK. That is why my primary is a Colt 6920, my Holographic sight is a EOTech and my EDC is a Kimber. Currently I am sporting on my war belt a Browning Hi-Power for my secondary.

Some will argue with my choices due to cost BUT I will never have to worry about them breaking down at the wrong time  ;)

I really like the way Salomon XA Pro Mids both fit and how well they hold up.  They are more of a mid height trail runner than hiker but they I have used them for a while and they have held up great under some significant use.  For a more durable boot I really like the Asolo Fugitive GTX. Like the Salomons the Asolos have held up great for me for a number of years.

Neither are inexpensive, but as Johny Mac said with shoes you get what you paid for and if your feet are unhappy so is the rest of you.

I tried Keens about a year ago when I needed some new boots.  They came apart on me 2 days into a 4 day trip.  REI took the return no question and assured me that they dont see that with Keens but I didnt take the replacements. Instead I went back to my tried and true Salomons.

Wow CJ, what were you doing to those boots man? I've been an avid fan of Keens for years now and typically wear out a pair a year but have never had a single pair just give up the ghost on me..
