Footwear Help...
« on: November 26, 2012, 04:24:45 AM »
A few months back I purchased a pair of Converse side zipper boots through my work and saved a ton of dough.  The one stipulation was that they had to have a safety toe.  I don't generally mind this except that I have a really wide foot and have never had great luck with safety toe footwear.  Well I got the widest they had which was just a "wide" and put them away as more of a "out of bed and dressed in 30 seconds to meet the reds parachuting in" type boots lol.  I have been wearing them a lot recently because they are generally comfortable and quick to get into.

And here is where I need help/advice.  With how wide my foot is, by the end of the day the safety cap has rubbed my fourth toe raw.  Any suggestion on stretching the safety cap or other remedy for this issue?

I, also being a wide-hoofed individual, have never found a remedy for the problem which you speak.  In fact, I've NEVER found a pair of hard-toed footwear that works for me.  On any job that ever required it, I would just tell a little white lie about it.... no one ever checked.  I'd like to have some hard-toed footwear, but I don't think it's possible for people like us.  I've learned my lesson and am not going to screw my feet up by wearing cramped footwear.

Thanks for the input.  I figured when I first discovered this that I would either have to compromise the safety cap or remove it all together.  Its a great friggin boot and want to save it if I can.  Might take em into a boot repair shop come payday if nothing else to see what they can do for me.  Id prefer to save the money if I can but like I said, they are great boots and at an unbeatable price which I got em for.

Let me know how it works out for you.. I have never really had a comfortable pair of steel toes either, I've had pairs that ate me up less than others.....

UPDATE

Called a local boot repair shop and was shocked by the response.  Apparently they have a machine that will take care of this for me for about 10 bucks and will take a couple days.  Thatll have saved me pain and dough and ill spend a few picking his brain for you steel toe fellers too lol

So I dropped off my boots at the shop and had a bit of a talk with the guy.  (not to much cause it was downtown and didn't feel like throwing my money away on the damn parking lol).  So I am gonna give it till Thursday trying to get the boots stretched out which should give me enough room to at least be painless.  And should it work, $10 is a hell of a deal to save a 150 dollar pair of boots.

For you guys with actual Steel Toe caps and not the composite, bout the best you can do with a pair you have now is to get it taken out.  Just have to look for your boots in an extra wide if you can, if that'll help.

So here is the deal...

I hate waste.  And to me, having a pair of boots that are uncomfortable to wear and unable to sell is a waste.  So... I did what the repair shop refused to do.  First I did a search on startpage.com and ended up here http://www.ehow.com/how_6961768_repair-remove-steel-toe-shoe.html

Pretty straight forward huh?  So I took my razor blade, separated the sole from the leather as far down as I needed and then once I was down far enough, I started slicing.  Naturally the caps were SOMEWHAT glued in place but with a little prying from my SOG multi-tool I popped the toe caps out.  A little Loctite 416 SUPER glue (this stuff helps airplanes fly... no, seriously...  ??? )and while they don't look like they are from right off the shelf they don't look bad.  Ill probably add some shoe goo on the edges too just for good measure, but these things should be good to go.

Maybe check out Keen shoes, they make a safety toe and are known for their wide footwear.

I typically wear an extra wide, my wife calls them my "tarzan feet," and the best I've found thus far are Georgia Boots. Not saying you're boots don't look okay after all the alterations, but I've never been one for the military look. I'll second TG on the Keens.
