Doggles

I think I posted somewhere on here that my Dutch Shepherd has been diagnosed with Cornea Pannus an immune mediated disease common in the shepherd breeds.

She has been going to the Cornell University Hospital in Ithaca NY once a month for the last three months. She has responded well to the drops we give her twice daily and her next visit with the Doctors is in three months. Her medication has been reduced to once a day and with one less eye drops too. By the way...Have you ever tried to give a 60# dog eye drops twice a day? It ain't pretty.

Anyhow now to the purpose of this post.

The Doctor wants our Dutchie to wear "Doggels" when outside if it is sunny or when we go hiking in the woods. Apparently if you live at a high attitude UV plays a negative role too.

   We have as pair of doggles for our pooch, for the times she rides in the Ural motorcycle sidecar.  They're a high quality product.  The biggest problem is getting her to keep them on.  We're still working on that...

 You have to take care of family members. I hope she gets use to them quickly.

Gotta take care of the hounddogs.  Hounds or herders or terrors or whatever.  They have a tough time getting a vet appt and with no thumbs opening the pill bottles is a no joy thing.

A good friend invited MrsMac, our Dutchie, and myself to a dog show sponsored by the ASPCA and the local Elks Club held today (Saturday). All of the proceeds went to the K9 Departmens of Binghamton, NY and Broom County, NY Police/Sheriffs department. 

Well to get quickly to the punch line our Dutchie won runner-up to "Best in Show." She was given a nice certificate and a $30- gift certificate to Texas Road House restaurant. A good time was had by all.

She only got into one altercation and it was when we all paraded our dogs in a circle before the cheering fans (all 40 or so of them - LOL).  A a Pit Bull mix bitch lunged at our Dutchie and before I could rain her in she had grabbed the neck of the Pit Bull and took her down. I got her under control ASAP and escorted her out of the parade. The Deputy Sheriff walked up to us and complemented me on controlling the situation (That was nice) and our  Dutchie. He then asked if he could give her a treat.

I explained to the Deputy that she will not take food from strangers so he smiled and handed me the treat and I gave it to her. He said, "good dog."

Again...A good time was had by all.

It is so good hearing how well Dortothy is doing as a member of your family. It is a major difficulty in finding good families for Dutchies and Mals.  Their drive and high energy mean that you need a family that will take the time to work with them.

Doggles are great, it has been tough getting my dogs to get used to them.  When we had the significant rain from Irma I brought them out with the doggles on.  My dogs hate being out in heavy rain, and the doggles blocking it from their eyes seemed to do the trick....now they are fine with them.

Thx CJS  I will not say it has been easy especially the emotional baggage she came with; However, my brother comments on the positive change she continues to make.

She is a funny one...When there are kids or young adults around she goes "thunder dome". Yet when she is visiting older friends she is so gentle. When I visit my mom she runs in and lays her head in her lap and my mom pets and coos over her.

On another note: The company I bought them from suggested that I take her out for a ride and let her hang her head out the window, one of her favorit things. Then stop and put the goggles on and drive away with the window still down. They assured my that she will get the message real fast. Funny thing CJS, our Dutchie hates going out into the rain too. Snow no worries...Rain, no freaken way. LOL.
