Two very good ideas! As to the cookbook, for me that's where the "prep what you use and use what you prep" mentality comes in for me. But, it'd be interesting to see what recipes people have.
One that we eat a lot in the WPW household is bean stew. A little chicken stock, some beans (soaked overnight - I'm fairly partial to 13 bean mix, myself), and some sort of meat (my preference is smoked sausage, fried up and then added to the slow cooker). You can easily make this in a dutch oven if power's out and you can't use the slow cooker.
