Renaissance of the Walkie-Talkie: Motorola T265 Rechargeable Two-Way Radio

May 12, 2019 By Travis Leave a Comment
Notice what’s NOT on those displays? “No signal.”

I don’t know how it works for you, dear reader, but for me it seems that the number of commercials a cell-service provider runs extolling the excellent reach and strength of their signal runs in direct–and inverse–proportion to how well that cell service actually works once I’m a few miles away from the nearest road. Losing the ability to communicate with members of one’s hunting party is not just maddening; it’s actually a safety hazard. Even young, fit people can suffer a medical emergency in the backwoods, and no matter how fancy one’s cell phone is, if there’s no signal there’s no signal. That’s why more and more hunters, hikers, and campers are turning back to the tried-and-true technology of the two-way radio to keep in touch…and that’s why I’m excited to hear about the new Motorola T265 Rechargeable Two-Way Radios Sportsman Edition in Realtree Xtra Camo.

These Realtree camo TALKABOUT walkie-talkies offers up to a 25-mile range, as well as emergency features and silent hands-free communication. They offer a push-to-talk button, as well as silent hands-free communication just in case you’ve got eyes on a nice (but spooky) trophy buck or bull. With a Realtree Xtra camo carry case, this two-way radio system will let you fully enjoy your wilderness adventure.

Performance characteristics:

    Range: up to 25 miles
    # of Channels: 22 channels + 121 privacy codes
NOAA Weather Channel and Alerts: Yes
    iVOX/VOX Hands-free: Yes
    Micro-USB Charging: Yes
    Dual Power: Yes
Battery Life (alkaline): up to 29 hours
Battery Life (rechargable NiMH): up to 12 hours
    Two-Year Warranty

The MSRP is $85; right now, the product is showing as backordered, but you can place an order now to get “on the list” for one as soon as Motorola has more inventory. Click here to reserve yours. Find Realtree on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and at Realtree.com.
If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

They're GMRS radios, nothing special, you can buy similar model's at Walmarts.  The 25 mile range would be under ideal conditions, perhaps from mountain peak to mountain peak.  In real life you would get a 1/2 to 2 mile range.

yup, GMRS.
if you're going to invest in GMRS, get a base station with a repeater function to make your range reasonable.
example, Midland - MXT400 is a 40W - add a decent antenna at a good height and that should be nice for short range patrols. i picked it a bit at random - its semi portable - think gator or quad.

---

i still like the idea of using a set of maritime radios in a TEOTWAWKI.  - cheap, good range, and an odd band when used inland.

The FRS and GMRS frequencies overlap and are in the 450 Mhz band. I've seen some evidence that the FCC is going to stop charging a the $85 fee for issueing GMRS Licenses but that has not been confirmed. I'm a MURS freak. The MURS 2 meter band gets way better range even though its limited to 2 watts. I'm also a BaoFeng freak because the UV5R is a $25 dual band radio (2 meters/440) and can operate on Marine, FRS, GMRS, MURS and HAM. During an emergency situation, I'm not going to let speeding influence my use of extra power. I keep about a dozen preprogrammed and fully charged UV5R's around the house and have given some others to family members for an emergency.

So that a "nothing to be impressed with" general view?

Yep. Basically that's about it. I could go on a rant about what I think everybody ought to do but in the end it would just be my opinion. I will say this. A watt is a watt, no matter what radio it comes out of. One watt out of a Motorola is the same watt that comes out of a WackyJackyPieceofcrappy. I'm all about the biggest bang for the buck. I want all the features I can get for the least dollars spent.
