Alkaline Battery Failures

Was replacing some batteries in flashlights and was sorting thru my stash to use the oldest ones first. Noticed several batteries, red duracell AA's, had leaked in the 36 pack. Also found a 18 pack of energizer AA's with 2 leaking batteries. This caused me to look at all the batteries I have on hand. So far just these incidents. These packs are less than 1 year old. Has anyone else seen this? I have not had any issues with any lithium batteries.

We have not had any issues. Since you bring it up here are some of my thoughts.

Back in November, I changed out all str purchased batteries with rechargeable ones. Bought a charger that can charge AAA -D and 9 volt batteries. We have successfully switched to those batteries with the exception of Eveready AA Alkaline batteries which MrsMac uses in her insulin pump. None others will work.

Rechargables are our heavy lifters here.  I find that my standard Alkaline AA's don't last long enough for bulk storage and the ability to recharge has saved us money in batteries.  The Amazon Basics rechargeable or any on these newer chemestry batteries are designed for thousands of recharges, whereas the older chemestry ones were a few hundred recharges max.  All of my QRP rigs and 'plastic' , general coverage radio receivers use AA batteries.

Doesnt surprise me with Alkaline batteries.  For long term storage I use exclusively lithium.

I use both, Alkaline and Lithium. I haven't had any leakage from the Alkalines except one or two that were installed in devices for a long time were trying to leak a little. I have few Metal Hydride rechargeables in my junk drawer.

Yeah, I had several (about 20) alkaline batteries that were supposed to be well within their freshness dates be defective recently.  Was a mix of AA Energizers and D cell Duracells. Some AA's with leakage, but only a couple.
