MAG ISSUES
« on: July 02, 2021, 05:41:04 PM »
Just curious if any of you have had issues with Mission First Tactical magazines.  I bought 3 today at an Academy Sports, AR-15 30 rounders.  Got home, started to load them, and the magazine springs would not compress beyond 20 rounds no matter how I tried to load them.  I noticed on the net they have a reputation for bad feed lips, but nothing about this.  Anyone else run into this issue?

I guess next time I'll spend a couple of more $ and get P-MAGS.

I have had issues with Pmags too. To be honest, they were earlier versions as I bought them in 2009 or '10. Newer and older versions of Pmags, do not fit well in my chest rig either. Good video Deathstyle.

SP1 has some good videos.  I especially like the one regarding fences, one that covers basic hand signals and another one that deals with authentication when using radios.  I don't think we have any MFT mags, mostly Pmags and surplus military aluminum mags.  For the AUG, we stuck with Steyr mags, though most AR mags will work in it fine..

When it comes to AR mags I stick with either USGI or Pmags.  With USGI mags I prefer steel versions over the aluminum bodies from a number of different manufacturers (D&H, Brownells, Accurate Mag, FN, etc). I do prefer HK maritime mags when I can stumble into them but refuse to buy one at normal HK prices. The mags that I use the most are Pmags as across the board they have been very reliable.  I have also had decent results with Lancer mags.

I will not use a number of brands including Hexmag, Promag, Fab, Hera, or MFT. I cant say I have any real experience with either Daniel Defense or Troy Mags.

You dont have to spend on HK, FN, or Lancer money to get good mags for a decent price. Spend the extra $1-2 per mag and get quality reliable mags. I cant tell you how many people bring me malfunctioning ARs and in the course of troubleshooting it turns out they "got a good deal" on a bunch of garbage mags. Dont give up reliability to pinch a couple of pennies.

Amen on that Chris, "Spend the extra $1-2 per mag and get quality reliable mags."

I asked Colt who manufactures their mags and they responded with Okay Industries. With the exception of the already mentioned PMags, I only run Okay Ind. They are not the cheapest for sure however, I think my life deserves a mag that works.

Damn right!  Okay makes Colt, Barret, Brownells, and a number of other "OEM" magazines.  Them and D&H are great USGI mags.  The HKs are awesome too but damn can they be heavy.

I ended up writing MFT and Academy Sports regarding the mag issue.  Never received a response from MFT- go figure.  Academy did email me back, basically stating they would "forward the issue to relevant dept.", so essentially file 13ing it.  I shop there mainly for ammo, as they tend to have the best prices in town. Won't shop there for accessories again.

I keep "several" mags for each mag fed weapon I own, so I do experiment sometimes with various brands.  I've tried most of the brands that have been mentioned and generally feel the same way as the rest of y'all.
PMAGS are the best I've found (and 90% of my stock), with Troy mags running a close second.  I only have a couple of Lancers due to the price, but they ran well too.
By the way, there was a deal on Troy 30 rounders at Midway, so those MFT's are now relegated to the Shit has hit the fan deep, deep reserve. I will take the MFT's out with me to the range next time I go and, if they malfunction, their next stop will be the recycling bin.

Deathstyle

I havent used them, but my only experience with them doesnt make me want to take the time to do so. I was at a 4 day training with a solid group of guys. One was given 6 Amend 2 mags to run at the class. They all fed fine and did not see to cause any malfunctions, but none of the 6 dropped free. We tried them with a number of different rifle brands including Noveske, DD, KAC, Hodge and Triarc. They had problems in all of the guns.  He stopped using them after the 2nd day and finished the class with Pmags.

With they price that Pmags and USGIs can be had for, its not worth playing with.

I've got many H&K mags, and they were very inexpensive, but I bought them 40 years ago too, back before AR's were popular.  Back then there wasn't many choices for "assault" rifles, and 7.62 was the major NATO round.  Back then H&K mags were going for $3-$4.  Uzi mags were about the same price back then.  Damn, I'm dating myself.

Never did get a response from MFT, but Academy Sports came through for me eventually.  Corporate responded to my letter and while I'm sure they'll still sell this junk, they gave a full refund on the bad mags plus a $5.00 store credit- none of which I asked for. Just took a bit to get back to me, for which they blamed Covid, of course.
Anyway, those mags are now back at the store and have been replaced with P-Mags. Lesson learned.

Thank you for the update.  It's good to know that Academy Sports did right by you.  We have one not too far away, and supposedly they have ammo available, if you know when to shop.  Fortunately, I have some inside info when it's available, which helps.
