Title: The REAL fix for the jamming 870
Post by: Kentactic on October 30, 2012, 09:09:07 PM
The rim of the cheap steel base ammo expands once fired and then presses againts the outside metal tab where the locking lug slot is. This area comes from the factory with all sorts of machining grooves for the rim of the case to grab onto. As you can see i ground and polished the machine markings out and the gun fires cheap ammo flawlessly now.

It seems, at least in my case the chamber itself had little to do with the problem as i had both remington and a private gunsmith hone and polish the chamber and it didnt fix the problem.

I may have this bare metal parkerized again to keep rust off it. well see.

Hopefully some one else with the same problem (anyone who buys a new 870) will read this and save them a lot of hassle.

Ya those usually do the trick. Many newer 870 Express shotguns have the issues. If yours dosent thats sweet.

Well I normaly rack the slide as hard and as fast as i can so i don't know if i'd notice.
I didn't really read the other thread where the shells locking up the gun completely?

Ya if its happening youd notice. The gun locks up and you have to slam the butt on the ground to extract the shell. Once i even ripped the rim off the case and it didnt extract.

Very nice Ken.

This is such a simple mod that there is no reason not to do it!

Think about it folks, a little sand and polish to clear up a very common 870 issue...  it a no brainer, make it happen.

Thanks Ken

I just used a dremel with a sanding bit and then a buffing wheel with polish. If you have a finer grit sanding wheel it will make polishing a lot easier.
