Antiseptic ointment, and cleaning products

I am just now getting into the DIY spirit, but for now I haven't made much on my own.  Here are a couple of links I found while researching my next DIY venture.  I wanted to see what kinds of antiseptic recipes exist that don't use tea tree extracts, since I'm not an Aussie and have to rely on other plants such as thyme and rosemary.

Notice that some of the same items used to make your own laundry soap can be used for making other cleaning supplies as well.  With all of these DIY suggestions, your girlfriend/wife will never have time for dinner on the town, or cuddling... FML

Sure, sounds like we're in for another exciting weekend at the TG residence!

We'll let you all know how well the ointment works in a week or so when the lesion I give TG later tonight either heals, or doesn't...  Don't worry, it will just be a minor flesh wound... as long as he doesn't try to fight it.

Too funny TGRL.

When I ran a 3/4" plastic irrigation pipe down from an old well my neighbor found up the mountain to the BOL; I never told my wife, my brother nor his wife that the water they were using in the house was not tap water brought from home. 

After a couple of days of observation, everyone was doing well (With the exception of my brother...His corny jokes got worst). I then told them that I had the water 'tested' and we were going to use it for drinking water going forward. Nobody ever knew that they were the test.   

So please feel free to do what ever tests that are needed for the "cause" on TG.

That's awesome JM!  I especially like that it's "for the cause".  I have a terrible habit of feeling guilty every time I use TG as my ginny pig.  I still do it anyway, but I now feel absolved in carrying out some tests.

FYI folks, I was searching the internet to find some local beeswax for the antiseptic balm and ran across some info on agricultural tax exemptions for keeping bees.  It turns out that there are quite a few counties in the U.S. that allow property tax exemptions for keeping productive bee hives- you'd have to check if your particular county is one.  I've been thinking how awesome it'd be to have fresh honey, cheaper beeswax, fruitful harvests of bee-pollinated produce, and swarms of loyal bees to guard your cache- the exemption would just be an added bonus.

We can but we choose not to have bee hives at the BOL. The reason being bears!

There was a local bee keeper just down the road until a few years ago. I mentioned to the farmer across the way in passing I was going to keep some bee's as the local guy had vanished. Well he told me that he didn't vanish but had moved his operation do to bears.

Apparently, the bears were tearing apart his hives; not for the honey but for the bee larva. He lost so many hives over the years he moved his operation to a more suburban setting at the county seat about an hour away. He still has a few bruins coming by but nothing like when he was on our mountain.

I think I wrote about this before: Another farmer about 2 miles away was having his sweet corn field thrashed. So one night he climbed a tree and shot the culprit. He called the game warden the next day who came by and measured the bear. He determined it was 580# and 7-8 years old after extracting a tooth. When the farmer asked the game warden where his truck was so he could put the bruin in it, the GW said, "You shot it it's your problem!" 

Since 2005 I have seen maybe a half dozen or so and have gone through two Weber grill lids. They ain't pretty after a bear has licked them clean.

Good looking out, JM!  We have bears in the NM mountains of course, but we don't have to worry about them where we are.  In fact, we don't really have to think about bears in most of the places we camp, so I never would've foreseen that issue.

I should point out that the healing properties of "grocery store" honey are greatly reduced when compared to "raw" honey.

Good looking out Special-K, we found some raw honey that is packaged in the restaurant style packs and man it is spendy!

We need to get some wax from the local bee wrangler, I'm going to pick up some raw honey when I am there and test it out on burns... Not looking forward to burning myself to see it work.

Living with a wood stove, as your only source of heat (Gas furnace being installed today) the next time I burn myself I am going to put some honey on it.

I purchased 4#'s from the local bee wrangler down the road who moved to the county seat up at the BOL. Will report on the affects. 

On another note: I have found an ice cube a great burn remedy. In the past when I have burned myself, I grabbed an ice cube and held it against the burn for a few minutes then took it off for a few minutes then back on the burn for a few minutes, etcetera till I got tired of it. What I found was the burning sensation went away quickly and the heal time was quicker.

Awhile back my brother cut himself so I went to the #1 first aid kit for some antibiotic ointment and a band aide for him. While in the first aid kit there was a vacuum sealed packet that contained safety pins.

Since my sister in-law had put together that kit I asked my brother why had his wife vacuum sealed safety pins. He told me, "Emergency sutures." YIKES! I don't know what would be worst...Putting them in or taking them out.
