Title: Rust On Truck Question

Two rust stains that seem to be coming from under the paint on my truck have appeared. The metal is solid it's just that the paint in the two area's is turning paint rust color. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Grind to bare metal and repaint or some other less drastic suggestion?

HHHMMM Paint is turning paint color?  Seems you have good paint.

If that is some error or some sort and you have the rust you mentioned, try Evapo-Rust.  I have heard good things about it but no personal knowledge.

Thx Nemo. The rust seems to be leaching through the paint from the inside. I can not get to the underside of the area to see if it is coming from the underside. I will get a picture later and post.

There's a bunch of rust converters on the market. Most turn the rust to a black surface that you can lightly sand and paint. If you have a Home Depot or Tractor Supply or hardware story, they will carry some brand or other. I've used the converters on trailers, farm implements and mowers and such.

If it's coming from the back side though, you'll have to treat both side to kill it. If it's run under the paint job, that'll have to be removed.

Sounds like there is a bit of moisture ingress in the paint going on.

Due to the fact that I immediately repaint any vehicle I get with flat paint. I just get the sander out and take the offending areas down to metal. Apply some primer and cover it with flat black.

Then I am known for the flat black thing around here. I carry a bunch of different flat paints in spray cans in the back of my trunk so I can do a camouflage change up on the fly if SHTF. Flat black as the base and a case of spray cans for flexibility.

Just my thing really.

I do however suggest getting the sander out and getting the area down to bare metal to see how much rust is there.
