Road Side Emergency Kits
« on: June 30, 2013, 12:15:30 PM »
I started this topic in part due to Kentactic moving from Ca. to WY.

Many years ago I started giving Winter Emergency Road Kits to people for presents. Often I would give one of these boxes to a relative for Christmas or a B-Day and they would politely say thanks and move to the next present.

With that said, at one time or another, they would come back later and say "thank you. Man O-Man I am glad I had that emergency road kit you gave me."

Sooooo, what all season road kit do you have in your vehicle. This is what I have in mine:

> In a small duffel
    * Three (3) road side flares
    * Can of deicer
    * Cheapo leather work gloves
    * Couple of packets of "wet wipes"
    * Small medical kit that has
       - Band aids,
       - Gauze
       - Tape
       - Antibiotic cream

    * Couple of bottles of H20
    * Mike & Ike candies
    * Small medicine bottle filled with petroleum jelly cotton balls
    * Small medicine bottle filled with strike anywhere matches
    * Two space blankets
> 8'x12' Blue tarp (Never opened and laying under seat)
> Bottle of gas preservative (In the door cargo holder)
> Qt of engine oil (In the door cargo holder)
> WD-40 (I use this a lot and not for emergencies In the door cargo holder)
> Leatherman type Multi tool (I use this a lot and not for emergencies too in the center console)
> In the winter I add
   * Coal shovel (Kept in bed of the truck)
   * Rock salt (Real rock salt put in two empty clump kitty litter jugs which are kept in a plastic milk crate AKA Space case)

   * Fleece blanket (Lay across back seat)
   * two pairs of gloves (Put in glove box)
  * Coil or two of 3/8" Dacron rope (Kept in bed of truck in the same milk crate as the rock salt)
   * When I remember a 12' hank of 5/16 chain (Kept in bed of truck)
   * An old straw broom (Kept in bed of truck)

What do you have in your vehicle for road side emergency's.

PS: Looking back, I have color coded what I have used personally and what I have used to help other people out I find stranded on the road. Black means I have never used it but still carry.

Only things I'd do differently would be adding stuff for major trauma, and using a wool blanket instead of fleece.

I personally don't have a vehicle currently, but that's where I'd have my more bulky/bigger items, more tools, some extra food/water, things that are too big/heavy to have in an EDC bag or carry on your person. Also, because of my area, I'd have a chainsaw and a bit of gas for it due to trees and such being on the roads, and some tow straps.

Add in some flat cardboard to help out when stuck in light to medium snow and ice. Nothing fancy, just an old card board box or two cut down so it lies flat.

Items I keep on hand:

Good pair go leather Mechanix gloves. (I know a lot of guys just say gloves, but I'm a snob in this area.) Cold weather gloves would be a wise investment. Changing a flat in the dead of winter during a storm would suck with normal gloves as they soak up water.

Hand Warmers

Emergency hand crank and solar AM/FM NOAA radio with USB for charging my phone.

Tools: wrenches, pliers, star bits, torque wrench, lug wrench, demolition tool ( My "Annihilator"), folding shovel, ax, bolt cutters, tie downs, screw drivers, and bungee cords. Oh and rope. Good rope.

Telescoping fishing rod. Never know when you might need/want it.

First Aid kit, road flares, emergency spot light, water filter, fleece blanket, emergency blanket, tarp, jumper cables, one of my favorite family pictures (aka motivation for life), and some freeze dried food.

If I'm traveling in winter I'll add some sand or kitty litter along with some extra heating items. Frankly though, I'm no yuppie. The only way the cold will get me is it's faster than my hips.   :-[ Crap, better start loading up extra goods.
