3d printer
« on: August 08, 2021, 01:40:22 PM »
So I got a 3d printer, pretty cool little toy. I have been using to make prototype parts for casting using the lost pla method. I have made a couple of holsters, mag storage racks, battery storage boxes. Any ideas on what else I could make thats useful. Any fun project ideas?

Congratulations! What did you get? I'm up to 4 of my own, the first one I built from a junky kit, really taught me how they work and how to fix issues. I also have an Ultimaker 2, which is a hunk of overpriced garbage, and 2 Prusa MK3S's, which are the best FDM printer you can buy IMO. I've also assembled 15 Prusas from kits for the makerspace at the school.

I use mine all the time, usually for little bits and bobs, like winders and hangers. The best use is what you're doing, as a prototyping tool prior to making the part in metal, whether CNC or casting. Feels much better to chuck a 5-cent plastic piece that doesn't fit than it does to have to scrap one you spent hours machining or casting  . I have a weird thing about LED lights, designing and building them, so I make all kinds of parts, shades, and lenses on the printers. I've also done some projects just for fun, such as my 1:3,600 Star Destroyer with a 10 mm Millenium Falcon attached to the back of the bridge. My project for the winter is to make a 6'x6' 3d terrain map of my county, with relief printed from LIDAR data and painted to match the aerial imagery. I've also made firearms-related stuff, CW paddles and other ham radio stuff, and a ton of little bits for photography and video.

Once you get into it, that printer will be running a lot! I always keep a couple spools of black, white, OD green, and clear PLA on hand. Since most companies make filament in batches, sometimes colors are out of stock for a bit.

If you have any questions, let me know. I'm no expert, but I've been using printers for a few years now and I've made a lot of mistakes to learn from!

I've got an Ender 3, which has proven to be useful.  I've printed a number of ham radio associated items, including spacers for making a caged dipole. I printed a bunch of whistles for our local MAG, with the pea inside, got the design off Thingaverse.  Made some curtain rod holders too for the loving spousal unit.  This winter I plan on printing some AR lowers.  One of our MAG members printed some AR lowers with his Ender 3, and supposedly they came out pretty good.  Not sure what filament he used.

The local college has an Ender 3 club, of which I'm a member.  They come up with some interesting projects.  They also have a fully equipped maker space, with many types of printers, laser cutters, etc.

I have 2 ender3v2's I got one to play with the wife liked it and took mine over so I bought another from Amazon Scratch and dent deals. I have started playing with more high end "engineering" filaments as of late and modifying my machine. Just looking for new projects as I'm starting to run out of ideas and it's too handy to have sitting idle. I'm saving most of the casting until winter as I don't want to be around the foundry in 90+ degree weather with 70-80% relative humidity. I have been working on a project but I need some blem intensifier tubes if anyone knows where to get some.

I wouldn't rely on a printed part for any critical functional part of a firearm.
