Alright, the wife wants to know how to make soap. Any trusted links on how to do it?
I know I could hit up YT and google pretty easy, but I figured the subject should be here on SP as well.
-
I was just going to make this thread actually.
I personally want to put a rope in my soap, so that I don't drop it..... :o ;D
-
We are using the UrbanFarmingGuys laundry soap right now, and we are loving it.

nice, thanks for the link. i'm gonna try that
-
It works great, you got to shake the bottle up before you pour it because it gets kinda stringy. One thing I have noticed is you don't need dryer sheets when you use that soap.
Makes you wonder...
-
I'm going to give this stuff a try myself, excellent link, another great way to save some cash. [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
Ive got to kids that have pretty sensitive skin, we really have to watch what we use because they tend to break out with nasty rashes. Any issues with this stuff to date that anyone knows about.
-
Thatguy,
What do you notice about its cleaning capabilities compared to marketed laundry soap? How good does it make the clothes smell? How does it perform with stains? Are the items she displayed the ones you use also, and were they of comparable price?
-
Rah, I pretty much made it the exact same way she did, on the next batch I am going to use a paint mixer to mix it. That may or may not be a bad idea, I will let you all know.
I used Fels Naptha Soap too and it leaves no noticeable odor on the cloths, I suspect that Zote will because it smells so much stronger in bar form.
I am a dirty dude and my cloths come out clean.
Strait, my wife also breaks into rashes over some of the soaps we have used and this one has given her no issue. I have even washed her delicates in it without her knowledge to see what effect it would have, none to report.
Cost Break down.
Bar Soap (fels or zote) $1
1/2 cup washing soda $3 for 55oz (15.25cups) 30 batches! .19 per batch
1 cup borax $4.50 for 72oz (10.16cups) 10 batches .45 per batch
Comes down to $1.64 per 10 gallon batch by my math if you wanted everthing to equal out say for long term storage you would need 30 bars of soap 1 box wash soda and 3 boxes of borax. So $46 for 15 years worth of laundry soap give or take.

Buddy, I'm loving this! Thanks a lot!

Sweet , thanks TG!

I am trying to find some good 'copy&paste' soap recipes.
-
the real question is thatguy....have you cleaned your beard with it???? and if so does it work well? :))
-
My Mom made the first batch and she was wondering how it would work as a shampoo so I tried it.. If you didn't thin it out to be 10 gallons I think it could have worked or if you are not a greasy hippy like me it might work but that funk was too thick and the soap was too thin....
-
I haven't tried it but it looks like it would work.

Warning about Borax:(personal experience)
Some rare individuals will experience burning-itching sinuses, face-skin, eyes, and/or respiratory irritation when exposed to Borax. This irritation usually comes on slowly (hours or days) and gets more severe with time. So severe, that a sensitive individual will react from being in the same room with a single piece of laundry washed with Borax containing soap. The rinse cycle does not remove all of the Borax and sensitive individuals will still react to the laundry, even at a distance. I'm telling you this stuff can become like tear gas to some individuals. Sensitivity to Borax is rare, but it is bad if you have it. :'(
Please pay attention especially if you have children. You may mistake the symptoms for a cold or ordinary allergies and they will only get worse if exposure is not stopped. If someone in your home is found to be sensitive, all laundry will have to be rewashed with a different soap/detergent, laundry baskets will need to be rinsed with water, inside of dryer needs to be wiped thoroughly with damp cloths and you might need to do the same with closet shelves and drawers. I suggest experimenting before contaminating you whole house with this stuff.
You can try making the laundry soap without the Borax. It will loose some of its cleaning power. I've read somewhere that baking soda can be substituted for the Borax. Just experiment with ratios.
EDIT: I'm not trying to discourage anyone from making soap. I don't doubt the recipes mentioned in previous posts clean very well. I know the batch I made did, and was very inexpensive. Sensitivity is very rare, but can become severe if not recognized and dealt with.

Great info Special-k, both of my boys are extremely sensitive to different soaps, just the kind of info I was looking for. I will keep my eyes peeled for any side effects, Thanks.
-
hahah Reaver actually had a good topic.
Winning. [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

I will say that my whole family (Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister and her two boys) uses that recipe with no trouble.
-
I can attest That guy has clean overalls. The stuff works.

I do!!! Before and after, please and thank you! Oh, and go into the prices per item, please. I have to explain to the wife why this option is more cost-effective...and I'm not sure how correct I am on thinking how this stuff works.
-
from what i understand right mao, a whole batch of this stuff is cheaper than one jug of the store bought stuff....
-
Me, too, but I would like to see just how much cheaper, and combine that with the video to show how much product you get for your money, and how it performs.

Nevermind...went back up and remembered that TG already listed his costs. [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

I already did a cost break down but I should have reposted it to keep it fresh, I'll make the video when I get the time to. You dig the trouble with making a video is that I can't just do it. I got to get the cameras all charged and what not so I got to find the extra time but it will be forth coming. I promise.
Cost Break down.

A safer way to make soap: Grease or fat from cooked meat + water + lye or fireplace ashes produce soap. You don't need much lye if you use that, just enough to bump the ph up. Mix the ingredients over heat until the caustic takes effect. Until then the water and grease will want to separate. Pour into mold and cakes and let cool.

At my house we mix the soap until the 'strands' are broken up and then pour it into an old Tide bottle that is small enough for the wife to shake liberally before pouring.
I am delighted that it worked well for you! Now go share the recipe with the masses. [url=http://www.freesmileys.or
