Twenty-six Prepper Items (Categories of Items) at Goodwill

Here is the top 5 items to look for to add to your preps from Goodwill centers I read on survival blog this morning.

1. Wool blankets – Wool blankets are the best for cold or wet weather. They can be expensive, though. Fortunately, some people don’t really like the feel of wool blankets and will give them away. This is your chance to get a great deal on one.

2. Tools – You will always find a variety of tools at thrift stores. Have backups for your backups. Things like hammers, wrenches, and screwdrivers are all worth adding to your stockpile.

3. Kitchen Items – Things like can openers, meat grinders, and manual blenders should be added to your cart.

4. Camping Equipment – This stuff is easy to find, and it’s great in survival situations. Everything from tents to campstoves can be picked up for a fraction of the cost.

5. Cast Iron Pots and Pans – You know you need these to cook over an open fire, but they are ridiculously expensive brand new. Buy them used.

At first I laughed because the article was such a duh! I drop by two local Goodwill centers once a month to look for things to add to my preps. Then I thought it was so obvious that many folks may not do it.

There aren't any Goodwill centers close to me...so as an alternative I peruse garage/yard sales and auctions.  I've found some really nice tools, kitchen items, and ironware at some farm/estate auctions.

Note the cast iron cookware.  My wife is a near expert on that stuff.  She bought a 10" fry pan at a yard sale for $15 because she recognized it.  Cleaned and seasoned it and sold it for $375.  It was pre-1940 and if she held out it could easily have gone for $450-500.  But cash is king.

Questions send me pics of the back and clean internal fry surface along with any names and numbers on it.

As a side note:

Be careful buying used steel fry pans like Lodge and others unless you know what has been cooked in them. People who make their own bullets use them often to mix lead and other metals to cast bullets. My neighbor uses several to cast lead fishing weights.

Any ironware I purchase I buy from people who know their origin and what was cooked in them.

 There are many Goodwill, second hand stores and temporary storage units here in LSD (Lower Slower Delaware) but the tourists clean house. All that is left are cloths, paperback love novels and pure junk. The same with yard sales. Now New Jersey people put stuff in for the trash collector you wouldn't believe. Almost new.
