During WWII the Nazi regime had to rely upon synthetic fuel to power the war.
The technology was something the oil refineries use to this day.
They used the Fischer Topsch process.

Now you can run a petrol engine on syngas directly and you can also run it through a distillation tower and extract liquid. These fluids distill out at different temps. The lowest temp is something like petrol and the higher temps are diesel and motor oil.
