Having Log Splitter Issues
« on: August 24, 2018, 01:27:58 PM »
I have a older log splitter that has worked great till just now. Maybe someone on the forum could help me out.

The issue:

1) At first I got no pressure out of the hydrolic arm that does all of the work splitting the log. The arm would go forward but would stop
when it came against the log.
2) When I pulled the lever to retract the arm hydrolic fluid comes out the vent on top of the fill cap.
3) Thinking there might be air in the lines, I went and replaced the hydrolic filter and topped off the tank as per instructions on the side
     of the splitter.
4) Now I get pressure and I can split logs BUT when I retract the arm again hydrolic fluid comes out the vent of the filler cap.

As of the last time I used it, April of this year. It worked great!

Thoughts?

Sounds like the ram's seal is leaking. Did you have to add fluid because of a leak or because of it blowing out of the vent. If it was because of the vent then I would suspect the ram needs to be repacked.
I found a trouble shooting guide that might help (?). Best to call up a hydraulic repair shop and ask. Easy job if you have the tools

Had a Terramite T5c backhoe/bucket loader.  Some of the cylinders started to leak so unhooking the lines and 2 cotter pins and pushing the pivot pins out (a couple needed hammering) and $40 at the local hydraulic shop and it was brand new.  Except for appearance.  Just resealed and made sure all internal was well and I could dig more.  Reconnected the hoses, greased and re-cottered the pivot pins and dirt was moving again.

I liked digging with that thing.  I could dig to China with it but it would take a while.

Thanks gents. All of a sudden the leaking issue stopped. I wonder if there was an airlock somewhere in the line (s) and it just worked its self out.

I love how somethings just work themselves out.

Be careful.  Keep a close eye on everything.  Thats often when everything gets in the handbasket and heads out.

If you had an air bubble in the ram cylinder or its lines the ram would jerk. You can't compress air, it would act like a spongy brake pedal on a cars brake system. Is it a kobota, if I remember correctly they had a self bleeding system and your problem might be cured.

Air can be compressed.  Think cans or air compressor tanks.

Fluids or liquids cannot be compressed.  They can be put under pressure by having a quantity of some type of gas compressed providing the pressure.

Thats why brakes get spongy.  The air/gas gets more and less compressed giving the sponginess.  The quantity of fluid remains the same and gains or loses pressure under the compression or reduction of compression of the gas involved.

My error, typing before thinking. Because it can be compressed is what causes the jerkyness of the ram.
