80% Lowers - AR 10/Ar 15
« on: March 09, 2015, 10:15:17 AM »
I looked at the archives for the 80% subject line. There were a few but they seem to go off on a political discussion hence this new subject line on 80%.

This is the YT video that sucked me in to drop ~$500- (Jig, bits, drill press, 80% lower, misc.) for my first 80% lower.

M4 / AR-15 80% Lower Finishing Part I

I am going to build one and I have decided to go with this companies jig. It seems to be a lot less idiot JohnyMac proof when compared to other companies jig.

In the market now for a table top drill press through Craigs list. The challenge is they tend to be close in price to buying a new one. We will see how the finances work out by the end of the month.

If you have built one in the past, I and others would like your input so post it here. Pictures are always welcome. As I progress with my project I will post on this subject line. Any political discussion will be flagged and deleted.  :DrillSgt:

This is strictly a DIY subject line - Politics!

Go to Harbor Freight.  Get one of the $79 ones there.  Let me know how it works on that project.  I bought a jig at a show 10 days back.  I had that press.  I do not have an 80%.  I want to make sure that press works well enough that I have a "finished" product and not scrap metal.

I second what Nemo said, either find a china press that will do it or an old yard sale one... chucking an end mill bit into your drill press and using a 2-axis vise like a milling machine is going to ruin that drill press.... they aren't made to take a lateral load.

My brother volunteered his drill press so no out lay of money there. The plan is moving forward....

MrsMac asked me after I hung up the phone last night with my brother asked me, "What are you up to and how much will it cost?" I guess I will be using my neighbors address again  ;)

Hey ThatGuy, if you were to have bought a rust covered 5.56x45 barrel...How would you clean it up - Navy Jelly?

Wife's son had a $79 Harbor Freight drill press his granddaddy had bought him a couple years ago.  He used it for drilling the half dozen holes he needed.  Side note he did not have an idea what an 80% lower was, but nearly spurted in his pants when I told him.  He gave me the press to use as long as I promised him the jig to use.

The jig I obtained had all the parts for jigging as well as color coded drill bits and all that stuff.  Now, I need to find an 80%er.
